Alice Doran Murphy, 99, formerly of Branchdale, passed away Saturday afternoon at ManorCare, Pottsville.

Born in Branchdale, April 24, 1914, she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Nellie Quinn Doran. Alice was a graduate of the former Reilly Township High School.

She was employed for many years at the Honey Bee Blouse factory, Branchdale, where she was also active in the ILGWU. In later years Alice was a volunteer at Good Samaritan Hospital, making visitors welcome with her warm smile and helpful demeanor. She was a life member in county Volunteers (VISION) R.S.V.P. where, through her efforts, care was given to several elderly neighbors with financial matters, picking up prescriptions and delivering to these neighbors.

Alice was a member of the former St. Mary Star of the Sea Parish and a member of St. Matthew the Evangelist Church, Minersville. She was a member of the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians, having served for many years as division president. She was chosen to be grand marshall of the St. Patrick's Day Parade in Pottsville in 1980 and in 1987, and Alice was honored as Hibernian of the Year. She was instrumental in bringing Irish dancing to the county (Ceili dancing). Alice was also honored with National and State Life memberships by the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians. She was well known as a faithful worker and fundraiser for her division and state.

Alice was also a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Pottsville, and the Booster Club as well as the Leisure Club, both of Branchdale.

Alice loved traveling throughout the United States and visited Ireland several times, Hawaii and various ports of call in the Caribbean. Some of the more memorable travels were to Wildwood, N.J., with her extended family every summer. While a member of the LAOH, she also traveled throughout the U.S. to attend National Conventions, visiting New Orleans, Louisville, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Cleveland and Miami.
