Charles Hummel Obituary

August 1, 2012

Charles W. Hummel Jr., 66, of Orwigsburg, passed away Wednesday morning at his residence.

Born in Pottsville, May 11, 1946, Charlie was a son of the late Charles and Margaret Bright Hummel.

Charlie was a 1964 graduate of Pottsville High School and a graduate of Penn State University.

Following in the family business, Charlie and his wife, Judy, owned and operated Hummel's Good Furniture Store, Orwigsburg, until January when they retired after 30 years in business.

For his entire life, Charlie spent summers at the Jersey Shore in Ocean City and Stone Harbor.

As captain of his boat, "Dude and Jude," Charlie was an accomplished deep sea fisherman. Charlie also enjoyed golfing, having played as a member of the "Fabulous Foursome."

Charlie and Judy's legacy will be the "Hummel House," a hand crafted log home that took three years to build. Charlie's ultimate project in wood will live on for hundreds of years.

Charlie was preceded in death by his sister, Margaret Whitaker; and his brother-in-law, Hugh Hoke.

Charlie is survived by his beloved wife, Judy, to whom he would have celebrated 25 years of marriage on Aug. 29; his golden retriever, Milo, who was his best buddy; four stepsons, David, Marc, Eric and Ryan Ray; four stepgrandchildren, Adam, Chelsea, Bryce and Ava; sisters, Catharine Hoke, Caroline Hummel and Elizabeth Estep; a brother-in-law, Chris Ward; several nieces and nephews.

Charlie had many good friends from all walks of life.

Funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family. Schlitzer-Allen-Pugh Funeral Home Inc., Pottsville, is in charge of arrangements.

Dear Judy and Family,
So sorry to hear about the passing of the "Dude". Charlie and I were classmates at Pottsville and roommates after college. The memories will never be forgotten: the bush parties, the Young Buck/Old Buck games, the "Palace", Larry the Lawyer, vists to "Gregory's" at the Shore and just enjoying life. Charlie was one of a kind and our prayers are with you and his family.

Dear Judy, Elizabeth, Catherine and Caroline- Childhood friendships are never forgotten as evidenced by the sadness I felt when I learned of Charlie's death. We played together along with all the Howard Ave. kids, walked to school and back 4 times a day (elementary and Jr High) and grew up in the 50's, the unique decade which connected us. I remember the Hummel house as a loving home, open to all their kids' many friends. Please know that Charlie was one of our favorite buddies and even though our paths separated after our school years, his essence, as described by the notes written here, never changed. He was for the 1st 16 years or so I knew him,a fine fellow whom we all liked a lot. Please accept my deep sympathy.

Dear Judy: This comes with the deepest sympathy at learning of your great lost. When my brother, Joe,called to let me know of Charlie's passing, he mentioned you stopping by the annual "Young Bucks/Old Buck's Game" and the Dude giving him a thumb's up sign from the car. Joe was most touched. Charlie left great memories with his many friends, and that includes at PSU. Do know that you and your family will be remembered in prayer.

Dear Judy,
I was sorry to hear of Charlie's passing early Wednesday morning and sorry that I didn't get to see him one last time before he left us.
I've known Charlie for a long time & always enjoyed the time spent with him. He gave us many great restaurant suggestions at the beach over the years.
He was one of a kind & will truly be missed. If there's anything we can do for you either here or at the beach, please don't hesitate to ask.

Judy & family. Still I am heartbroken over Charlie's death. It will take a long time for me to get over it. As stated in the obiturary, Charlie had friends "across the board", me being one of them. Charlie got me into the Army Reserve, and Theta Chi Faternity, among many other joint "endeavors". Charlie lived his life to the fullest, which sadly many people don't. I will miss Charlie........he was "the Dude".

Judy & family, I was so sorry to hear of Charlie's stroke along with his cancer issues. He really had a lot to deal with as did you. I'm Caroline's friend and she told me about Charlie's health at Margaret's funeral in July. My sympathies are with you all. It sounds as if he had a good life and enjoyed himself. I remember him as the younger brother of the girls and I met you several years back at the furniture store. You all are in my prayers. Merrie Seltzer Bender
