Dr. Eugene S. Surmacz, 81, of Bloomsburg, formerly of Schuylkill Haven, passed away Tuesday at Geisinger Bloomsburg Health Care Center.
Born in Trafford, Sept. 8, 1931, he was a son of the late Stanley and Mary Cheplic Surmacz.
He served in the Army.
He was a member of St. Ambrose Roman Catholic Church, Schuylkill Haven, and Schuylkill Haven Rotary Club.
A graduate of Trafford High School, he then attended the University of Pittsburgh where he received his bachelor's and master's degrees and doctorate. He started his career as a high school biology and chemistry teacher at McKeesport High School and Trafford High School and later held positions as a principal at East Washington High School and assistant superintendent at Washington School District in western Pennsylvania.
He was the superintendent of Schuylkill Haven Area School District, Schuylkill Haven, from 1970 to 1993.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Stojakovich Surmacz, in 2010.
Eugene is survived by two brothers, Fred, Claridge, and Theodore, Troy, Ohio; a daughter, Cynthia, wife of Scott Rubin, Bloomsburg; two sons, Eugene Jr., husband of Vanessa Surmacz, Lewisberry, and Richard Surmacz, New York City; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Ambrose Roman Catholic Church, Schuylkill Haven. A viewing will be held from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the Mass at the church. At the family's request, memorial donations may be sent to St. Ambrose Church Memorial Fund, 201 Randel St., Schuylkill Haven, PA 17972. Interment will be in Schuylkill Memorial Park. Geschwindt-Stabingas Funeral Home Inc., Schuylkill Haven, is in charge.
