Glenn R. Kessler, 85, of Locustdale, passed away Monday afternoon at his residence.

Born in Locustdale, June 17, 1928, he was a son of the late Edward and Gertrude Schwemlein Kessler.

He was a 1946 graduate of the former Butler Township High School.

Glenn served in the Army in Berlin, Germany.

He was employed as a coal miner for local "bootleg coal holes" and later at the Potts Colliery, Locustdale, until its closing. After the closing of the colliery, he worked as a custodian at the former W.C. Estler School, Ashland, where he was known as "Smokey." He continued in the North Schuylkill School District serving as scorekeeper for the basketball and wrestling teams and as clock operator for North Schuylkill's football team until his retirement.

A lover of baseball, Glenn was affiliated with baseball teams in Locustdale and was a great New York Yankees fan.

He was a member of Grace Evangelical Independent Church, Locustdale, where he started in the cradle roll department in 1930 and continued his involvement with the church as an official board member and officer for many years.

Preceding him in death were brothers, George, Bob, Earl and Edward Jr. Kessler; and two sisters, Grace Kessler and Ruth Jones.

Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Theresa "Dot" Kessler; son, John Kessler and his wife, Debbie, Ashland; daughter, Dottie Kessler, Manville, N.J.; grandchildren, Christine and Douglas Bradley and Amber and Angela Kessler; sister-in-law, Betty Taylor, Orwigsburg; nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Grace Evangelical Independent Church, Main Street, Locustdale, officiated by the Rev. Rose M. Marquardt, pastor. Interment with military honors will follow in Brock Cemetery, Ashland. A viewing will be held at the church from 9 a.m. until the service. Memorials may be made to Grace Independent Church, Main Street, Locustdale, PA 17945. Richard W. Fritz Funeral Home, Ashland, is in charge of arrangements.
