To the entire Schappell family ... keep your heads up ... remember this chinese proverb ... 'A child's life is like a piece of paper on which every passerby leaves a unique mark' ... Irv made so many good positive marks on the papers of more children than most ... his love and dedication showed a wonderful path to be followed ...Knowing I was able to contribute for a short time at Railway Park makes me proud to say I loved him for the man he was ... he was truly a very unique and respected human being ... May he rest in peace ... Steve Marcuse

Joan,Joanie,Duece,Bobby,Joe,
Thank you for sharing a great man with all of us. He coached our children, and showed them what sports were all about. He cared for Railway Park as if it was his own home and made sure we all had enjoyed it also. He helped coach a team of young men to the Little League World series and put Pottsville on National TV and made us all proud. Thank you Irv for being you. We will all miss You.

Never has one man done so much for the youth of Pottsville as Irv. I met Irv in the late 70's when my son played little league at Railway on an opposing team. As the years went on and I got to know the man, I so admired and respected him for the true generosity he showed by the countless hours he spent mentoring our youth. Penn State has Joe Paterno. Pottsville had Irv Schappell. Rest in peace and Thank You Irv.

When I heard of Mr. Schappells' passing a poem I have read many times came to mind "A hundred years from now it will not matter what my bank account was,the sort of house I lived in,or the kind of car I drove, but the world may be different because I was important in the life of a child" Well you were and we love you Thank you for making a differance in my childrens' lives, and mine Beth (Buchanan) Ryan

Dear Joan & family,

It was a warm summer night in 1974.
I was sitting on the front porch of 518 Harrison Street with my wife.

That was the first-time I saw Irv.
He replied hello to several neighbors who called out to him.
My wife said, Mr. Schappel is a Railway Park Little League Coach;
As he slung the baseball equipment bag over his shoulder and headed into his house.

About fifteen years later, that same man would lead a junior high football team of young boys to a season to remember. Irv’s talent was teaching fundamentals, conditioning and adding just enough motivation. My son was one of those players fortunate enough to have played for Coach Irv.

Irv certainly left a positive imprint on many young men and boys in the city of Pottsville.

Our family is grateful.

To my friends the Schappells,
There is, was and always will be only one Irv! It's the memories that will live forever and bring the joy of everlasting life. Those memories will get you through this difficult time. We will cry, laugh and remember many things in the short term. No one is perfect and Irv certainly wasn't. But the good he did far outweighs the rest. So many people were touched by his selflessness. God will Bless Irv Schappell for he has blessed so many.

Countless games, always a warm hello..the lives he touched are endless and better for him. May God be good to him, and keep his wonderful family in His graces. Love, Joe Sophy

Our Deepest Sympathy goes out to the Schappell family and all his friends who will miss him greatly. In life there are very few individuals that make a positive impression that will last your entire lifetime. Irv was one of these few. I am so proud that I was able to coach with the man and watch him teach the game of baseball and softball to so many young people. No greater tribute can be given by those that were so fortunate to have been coached by Irv then to hear the words--Mr. Schappell-now here was a Man... God Bless and RIP my friend...

I remember being at the house in Pottsville and Duce, Boddy and Uncle Irv were going on and on about a baseball game, neither one giving the other an inch. Everyone in the house was laughing because the three of them were so adamant that each of them had a point to make. It's a great memory that I will always have. Rest in peace Uncle Irv.
