Leroy P. Kessler, 79, of Carbon Street, Minersville, passed away Saturday at Schuylkill Medical Center-South Jackson Street.

Born in Heckscherville, June 27, 1934, he was a son of the late Stephen and Margaret Close Kessler. He was a 1953 graduate of Cass Township High School.

He was the husband of the former Helen Ann Lohin Kessler with whom he shared 54 years of marriage on July 5, 2013 .

Leroy was a member of Ss. Peter & Paul Byzantine Catholic Church, Minersville, and a lifetime member of Rescue Hook & Ladder, Minersville.

Leroy had previously been active in youth sports including CYO basketball, Miners-ville Little League baseball and Minersville Teener League baseball.

He was employed by Hexcel Corp., and in years past, was a part-time bartender at the Blu Tavern, Macario's Bar and Mackeysburg Social Club. He was also a faithful bartender for his parish at Hillcrest Hall.

In addition to his wife, Helen, he is survived by two sons, David L. Kessler, Galloway N.J., and Mark Kessler, husband of Heather, Hamburg; a daughter, Lisa, wife of Matt Leonard, Oreland; a brother, Francis "Frank" Kessler and his wife, Barbara, Harrisburg; grandchildren, Ryne, Brynne, Leah and Cason Kessler and Evan and Derek Leonard; nieces and nephews.

A Divine Liturgy will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday at Ss. Peter & Paul Byzantine Catholic Church, Minersville, with the Very Rev. Francis Twardzik, S.D.B., officiating. Friends are invited to attend a visitation from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 6 a.m. until the time of services Friday at Mahal-Ritzel Funeral Home Inc., Minersville. Interment will be in Ss. Peter & Paul Byzantine Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations made in Leroy's name to Ss. Peter & Paul Memorial Fund.
