Sister M. Elaine Joyce, IHM, died March 9 at Camilla Hall, Malvern. She was in chapel preparing to read for Mass and was surrounded by her religious community when she passed.
Sister Elaine was 86 years old. She will be greatly missed.
Born in Locust Gap, in 1926, she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Esther Murray Joyce.
Sister Elaine entered the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in 1944, at the age of 17.
In her 68 years of religious service she was assigned to many locations, St. Philomenia, Lansdowne, Santiago, Chile, St. Aloysius, Bryn Mawr, Incarnation, Philadelphia, St. Stephens, Port Carbon, Immaculata High School, New Jersey, St. Maria Goretti, Philadelphia, Holy Family, Harrisburg, Immaculate Heart School, Girardville, and Camilla Hall, Malvern.
Sister Elaine spent most of her years teaching grade school and high school students religion and English. Fluent in Spanish from six years in South America, she would help in Spanish speaking communities wherever she was stationed. She had a master's degree in religion and philosophy.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her siblings, Raymond, Bernard, Charles, Larry, Joseph and Anne Joyce Youch.
Surviving are two brothers, Edward and Jack Joyce; nieces and nephews; grandnieces and grandnephews.
