Robert J. "Hoppy" Smith, 83, of Mahanoy Plane, passed away peacefully Wednesday morning.

Born April 2, 1930, he was a son of the late Daniel and Mary Carey Smith.

A 1947 graduate of Gilberton High School, he had been employed as a brakeman for the Reading and Conrail Railroad System.

He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Frackville; lifelong member of American Hose Company No. 2, Mahanoy Plane, Frackville Elks Lodge 1533, Knights of Columbus Council 748, Girardville, and a member of United Transportation Union 0386.

In his younger years, Hoppy was an avid baseball player and loved to watch the Phillies and Eagles. He also enjoyed playing cards with the guys at the firehouse, taking trips to the casino and spending a lot of time with his loving family.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sisters, Frances Green and Anna Smith; and brothers, Jonas, Daniel, Joseph, Michael, John and William Smith.

Robert is survived by his wife of 62 years, Anna Griffin Smith; sons, Robert and his wife, Colleen, Elizabethtown, and Patrick and his wife, Dot, Harrisburg; daughters, Maureen and her husband, Mark Cannon, Manassas, Va., Jule Ann and her husband, Joseph Joyce, Mahanoy Plane, and Colleen and her husband, Kevin Joyce, Ringtown, Sister Donna Marie Smith D.C., Wilmington, Del., and Elizabeth Smith, Wallingford; 12 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Thomas M. Sullivan Funeral Home, Frackville. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Frackville, with the Rev. Robert Finlan, pastor, as the celebrant. Interment will be in Holy Rosary Cemetery, Englewood, Frackville. Friends may call from 5 until 8 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. until the time of service Saturday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers contributions in Robert's name be made to St. Peter Cathedral School, 310 W. Sixth St., Wilmington, DE 19801.
