Rodney Unger Obituary

January 26, 2013

Rodney R. Unger, 73, of Leck Kill, entered into blessed eternal life Saturday at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville. The beloved husband, father and grandfather had been ill for the past month.

He was born in Spring Glen, March 31, 1939, and graduated from Upper Dauphin High School in 1957. On April 29, 1961, he married the love of his life, the former Leah K. Schreffler.

Rodney was a member of Valley Lodge 797 Free and Accepted Masons, Valley View, and belonged to the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, Valley of Williamsport, where he attained his 32nd Degree.

He was an avid Phillies baseball fan. In his spare time he enjoyed reading, travelling to gospel concerts and attending services at Emmanuel Wesleyan Church. He also enjoyed his weekly breakfast trips to the Americus Hose Company, Sunbury, where he was a member.

Rodney was well known for his encyclopedic memory of names, dates and events. He will also be remembered for the kindness and generosity he expressed to others in numerous ways.

For the past 44 years, he was a dedicated and hardworking employee of Troutman Brothers, Klingerstown. Rodney also had an entrepreneurial spirit and engaged in many ventures throughout the years.

He was a proud father and grandfather who enjoyed talking to his "babies" on a daily basis.

Survivors include his beloved wife, Leah; a daughter, Darby McDonnell and her husband, Tom, Bloomsburg; a son, Chuck Unger and his wife, Diane, Overlook; two blessed grandchildren, Adam and Amanda Unger, Overlook; his precious cat, Hector.

Viewing will be held from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Emmanuel Wesleyan Church, 6297 Lykens Valley Road (Route 25), Gratz. Viewing will also be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at the church, where the funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Daniel Durkee officiating. Interment will follow in Himmel's Cemetery, Rebuck. The family will provide the flowers and suggest memorial contributions be made to Penn View Bible Institute Music Department, 125 Penn View Drive, Penns Creek, PA 17862. The Stephen R. Rothermel Funeral Home, Klingerstown, has charge of the arrangements. To sign the online guest book, please visit www.srrfh.com.

I am so sorry to hear about Rodney's passing. He was a wonderful person, so kind to everyone he came in contact with while delivering oil. I remember how nice he was to my dad before he passed away five years ago. The world has lost a special person. Rest in peace Rodney.

What a sweet man Rodney was. I remember the first time I met him. He came to your house to deliver heating oil and I was holding my newborn. He was all smiles and congratulated me. He had such a sweet personality and smile. Everytime we saw him he had that smile and a greeting of joy. Will be praying for all the family at this time of loss. Dale and Kathleen Rothermel
