Kenneth W. Zimmerman, 81, of Mountain Road, Tamaqua, died Monday at his residence.
He was the widower of Gloria J. Zimmerman, who died Oct. 9, 2013.
Born in Hamburg, May 4, 1932, he was a son of the late Walter R. and Emma Leiby Zimmerman.
A 1950 graduate of Tamaqua High School, he lived in the Lewistown Valley most of his life, assisting his father in the milk processing and delivery business known as Leiby Farms Dairy. In 1956, he and his brothers, Ronald and Floyd, purchased the dairy business and formed a corporation, Leiby's Dairy Inc., which was jointly owned by them until 1992. In 1992, the dairy was sold to the present owners, his son, Keith, and daughter, Kathy, and their spouses, Carla and William.
In 1964, Kenneth and his brothers formed a corporation, Leiby's Dairy Stores Inc., which opened Leiby's Ice Cream House and Restaurant in May 1965. The restaurant was sold April 1, 1991. Kenneth was active at the dairy and restaurant in many capacities during those years.
Kenneth and his wife, Gloria, owned the business known as Anchor Deep, located on Spruce Street, Tamaqua, where they operated a popular seafood store as well as a refrigeration and storage facility for many years.
Kenneth was a member of Zion Church, Lewistown Valley, and Word Family Church, Harwood.
In addition to his many activities with his immediate family, he loved to fish and hunt with his brothers and many friends and did so very effectively. He hunted in western United States and hunted and fished in Canada. He loved to fish in the Cold Run and Upper Little Schuylkill River, as well as other local streams. He was an avid deer hunter and harvested a good number of nice bucks as well as small game.
Surviving are a daughter, Kathy Jo Zimmerman and her husband, William L. Parks, Orwigsburg; son, Keith Zimmerman and his wife, Carla, New Ringgold; grandsons, Taylor Parks and Zachary and Tyler Zimmerman; brothers, Floyd R. Zimmerman and his wife, Peggy, and Ronald C. Zimmerman and his wife, Peggy, both of Lewistown Valley, and Robert A. Zimmerman and his wife, Barbara, Charlotte, N.C.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Zion Church, Lewistown Valley, 491 Valley Road, Tamaqua, with the Rev. Jim Williams and the Rev. Hugh Lupien officiating. Interment will follow services in Zion Cemetery, Lewistown Valley. Calling hours are 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Zizelmann-Roche Funeral Home, 500 E. Broad St., Tamaqua, and from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at the church. Memorials in his name may be made to Word Family Church, P.O.
