Our beloved Mary T. Powell, 91, formerly of Cumbola, passed away peacefully in her sleep Wednesday morning at Berkshire Centre, Reading.
Born in Pottsville, March 7, 1923, she was a daughter of the late Patrick J. Quirk Sr., who died in 1983, and Ruth Stutz Quirk, who died in 1975.
She was a graduate of the former Blythe Township High School, New Philadelphia. During World War II, she was employed by the War Department and then the U.S. Treasury Department in Washington, D.C. Mary retired after being employed for the Recorder of Deeds Department in the Schuylkill County Courthouse.
She was a member of the former Holy Family Roman Catholic Church, New Philadelphia, and a member of the Schuylkill County Courthouse Retirees Association.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Edward J. Powell II, who died Feb. 28, 1975.
Mary loved her children and their spouses, Judy and husband, Carl Pardini, Pottstown; Edward Powell and wife, Kelly, Schnecksville; and especially her grandchildren, Lauren, Jay, Eddie, Mitchell and Mary. She is also survived by brothers, Patrick J. Quirk Jr., husband of Helen, Cumbola, and Emmitt Quirk, Cumbola; a sister, Dorothy Kemple, Beverly, N.J.; and nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at Holy Cross Roman Catholic Church, New Philadelphia, with the Rev. Ronald J. Minner as celebrant. Relatives and friends may call from 10:30 a.m. until time of service at the church. Interment will be in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville, with her husband. Thomas J. Bartashus Funeral Home, New Philadelphia, has charge of arrangements.
