Neil Franklin Currens, 82, of Sanford, N.C., passed away peacefully Thursday.

Born Dec. 16, 1931 in Oak Park, Ill., he was a son of the late Ray Franklin Currens and Mae Siler.

Neil graduated from Proviso High School, Maywood, Ill., and from Elmhurst College, Elmhurst, Ill., with a bachelor's degree in business.

He served in the Army Infantry during the Korean War with the rank of 1st Lieutenant.

Most of his business career was in sales with the makers of Lysol products.

Neil was a deacon at Wyckoff Reformed Church, Wyckoff, N.J.

He served on the Hillsdale, N.J., Town Council and also served for 8 years in the Yokefellow Prison Ministry of North Carolina and volunteered at Christian United Outreach Center, Sanford. He also served on the North Shore Architectural Committee at Carolina Trace.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Marjorie Currens Proctor.

Neil is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Connie Kocur Currens; daughter, Laurie Badone and husband, Ron, Mahwah, N.J.; son, John and wife, Christine, Woodcliff Lake, N.J.; grandson, 2nd Lt. Ryan Franklin Currens and wife, Victoria; and granddaughter, Lauryn Nicole Currens.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Christian United Outreach Center or Trinity Lutheran Church or a in Neil's memory would be appreciated. A memorial service will be held Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church, 525 Carthage St., Sanford, N.C. Interment will take place at a later date at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville.
