Mary T. Rigney, 96, of New Philadelphia, went home to God on Monday evening at Seton Manor, Orwigsburg.

Born in Pottsville, Dec. 16, 1917, she was a daughter of the late George and Isabel Montgomery Baumann.

She was a graduate of Pottsville Catholic High School.

She was a member of Holy Family Roman Catholic Church, now Holy Cross Roman Catholic Church, New Philadelphia.

Mary was a devoted wife and mother who loved her family dearly. She was a housewife who volunteered at Holy Family rectory (meals), convent (ironing), church (altar linens and especially decorating with flowers). At the parish picnics, she made the candy apples and "oh so delicious" halupki.

She was a Brownie, Girl Scout and Cub Scout leader.

After her family was raised, she worked as a unit secretary at Pottsville Hospital where her leadership and organizational skills were put to good use for 18 years.

Mary was the last member of her immediate family. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John V. Rigney, in 1989; an infant son, John, in 1945; daughter, Mary Ann Rigney Barrett, in 2013; two sisters, Elizabeth "Betty" Lutz (Bill) and Isabel "Toots" Amodei (Freddie); and brother, George Baumann Jr. (Frieda).

Mary is survived by a son, Monsignor Dennis A. Rigney, Lake Wynonah; two grandchildren, Robert J. Barrett Jr., Cressona, and Nancy Barrett McNelis (John), Mahanoy City; two great-grandchildren, Emily Barrett and Thomas Barrett, Tuscarora; nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday at Holy Cross Roman Catholic Church, New Philadelphia, with the Rev. Ronald J. Minner as the celebrant and Monsignor Dennis A. Rigney as concelebrant. A viewing will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the church. Interment will be in Holy Family Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, Masses or memorials at Holy Cross Parish or Seton Manor, Orwigsburg, where Mary was provided with the finest of care for the past six years, is encouraged by her family. Thomas J. Bartashus Funeral Home, New Philadelphia, is entrusted with arrangements.
