Joseph F. Huth, 86, of Frackville, died peacefully Friday with his family at his side at Schuylkill Medical Center-East Norwegian Street.

Born in Frackville, he was a son of the late Frank and Florence Haupt Huth.

He had been employed as an auditor for the PA State Inheritance Tax Bureau until his retirement.

He was a member of St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church, Frackville, and a life member of Frackville Elks Lodge 1533.

Joe was a well-known local athlete and sports enthusiast. He was a standout player for the former Frackville High School, both in basketball and baseball. After graduation, he played for the Philadelphia Athletics and played in the East Penn Semi Pro League. At the age of 20, he was signed by the Boston Celtics but then chose to return to Frackville to marry his high school sweetheart.

Joe had coached the North Schuylkill basketball team and for years was involved in Frackville Youth sports programs.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 38 years, the former Sarah Beddow, in 1989; two brothers, Francis and John Huth; and three sisters, Regina and Agnes Huth, and Mary Rudiman.

Joe is survived by his son, Joseph and his wife, Janice Huth, Frackville; his granddaughter, Jennifer and her husband, Jaryd Reiner, Palo Alto; his great-granddaughter, Adrianna Reiner; his sister, Eleanore Antz, Frackville; and by several nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday in St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church, Frackville, with the Rev. Robert T. Finlan, pastor, as the celebrant. Interment will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Frackville. Friends may call from 9:30 a.m. until the time of Mass on Tuesday at the church.
