Michael Gera, 79, of Spencer Street, Frackville, passed into the arms of our Lord Friday evening at Schuylkill Center, Pottsville.

Born in Raven Run, he was a son of the late George Sr. and Theresa Sylvasi Gera.

Michael was an active parishioner and choir member of St. Mary Byzantine Catholic Church, Saint Clair, he also assisted the cantor at church services.

He attended school in Raven Run, West Mahanoy Township, and graduated from Frackville High School, Class of 1949. After graduation, he attended college at St. Procopius Benedictine University, Lisle, Ill. and Ss. Cyril and Methodius Byzantine Catholic Seminary, Pittsburg. Mike graduated from Duquesne University with a B.A. in Sociology.

Mike received his municipal police training from the PA State Police Academy, Hershey. He completed two additional years of education at Penn State University for police administration.

Mike became the first permanent police chief in Ringtown and was last employed as police chief of West Mahanoy Township before retiring.

He was a lifemember of North Schuylkill Lodge 25 of the Fraternal Order of Police and a member of the PA Chief of Police Association. He was past-president of Local 747, United Packing House Workers of America, Elizabeth, N.J.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Kowatch and Mary Hollick; and six brothers, Nicholas, John, Andrew, George Jr., Joseph and Paul.

Michael is survived by his wife, Dorothy Torbich Gera, to whom he would have been married 54 years July 6; two daughters, Dorothy Marie, at home; Barbara Ann Darvell and her husband Jerry, Freeland; two sons, Michael and John, at home; a sister, Elizabeth Prock, Frackville; a brother, the Rev. Francis T. Gera, Silver Spring, Md.; five grandchildren, Terri-Lee, Christopher, Steven, Lucinda and James; two great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.

Religious services will be held at 9:45 a.m. Wednesday at Albert L. Gricoski Funeral Home, Frackville. Divine Liturgy with burial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in St. Mary Byzantine Catholic Church, Saint Clair, with the Very Rev. Francis M. Twardzik as celebrant. Relatives and friends are invited to call from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with Parastas at 7 p.m., and again from 8:30 to 9:45 a.m. Wednesday. Interment will be in St. Michael parish cemetery, Shenandoah Heights. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Mike's name to St. Mary Byzantine Catholic Church, 131 S. Morris St., Saint Clair, PA 17970. Albert L. Gricoski Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
