James D. Major, 72, of 684 Fountain St., Ashland, passed away Tuesday evening at Geisinger Shamokin Community Hospital, Coal Township.

Born in Pottsville, Jan. 3, 1941, he was a son of the late James and Anna Hughes Major.

He was a 1958 graduate of the former Ashland High School.

He served in the Air Force in England with the 20th Tactical Fighter Wing. Following his military service, he was employed as a project inspector of abandoned mine reclamation for the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection until his retirement.

He was a member of Ashland Lodge No. 294 F&AM, Ashland VFW Post No. 7654, serving as chaplain, Ashland American Legion Post No. 434, and a life member of the National Rifle Association.

He was of the Methodist faith, and he cherished time with family and friends at the pond, known among family and friends as LPOE.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Marcia, on May 27, 2007; and a brother, David Major, on Oct. 29, 2012.

Surviving are sisters, Jennet, wife of Earl Deeter, Hegins, and Ruthann, wife of Robert Schaeffer, Pine Grove; brother, Richard Major, Ashland; sisters-in-law, Betty Ann Major, Gordon; brother-in-law, Charles Blewis, Ashland; his best friend, Heidi, his dog; and 16 nieces and nephews.

Funeral and interment services will be private. Memorial contributions may be made to Ashland VFW, Post 7654, 538 W. Centre St., Ashland, PA 17921. Richard W. Fritz Funeral Home. Ashland, is in charge of arrangements.
