Lynda A. Meirick, 70
St. Cloud
Nov. 9, 1943 - March 14, 2014
Lynda Meirick, 70, died Friday at her home in St. Cloud.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 18 at Christ Church Newman Center with the Rev. Tony Oelrich officiating. Visitation with friends and family will start one hour before the service.
Lynda Anne Lehtinen was born to Arne and Emily (Morin) Lehtinen on Nov. 9, 1943, in Hibbing. She graduated from Grand Rapids High School in 1962 and from Itasca Community College (ICC) with an associate's degree in 1964. She then attended the University of Minnesota-Duluth, where she met Michael Meirick. They were married on Sept. 4, 1965 in Grand Rapids. They had two sons, Patrick and Robert.
The family lived in Brainerd, Ely, Duluth, Center City, and Fargo, ND, before settling in 1975 in Grand Rapids, where Mike worked as a counselor at ICC. When her sons were in elementary school, Lynda worked as a secretary at ICC, where she also was shop steward for the local AFSCME union. When her sons went to college, Lynda went back to school, earning her bachelor's degree in psychology from Bemidji State University with highest honors. Mike retired in 1993, and in 1999, Mike and Lynda moved to St. Cloud. They spent many winters in Panama City Beach, FL, until Lynda's cancer diagnosis in 2012.
Lynda's lifelong passion was making things more beautiful. Her home was always a work in progress as she renovated, redecorated, and remodeled, while outside she made sure to deadhead all her flowers and protect them from marauding deer. She cooked healthy food for her family and enjoyed aerobics classes and working with a personal trainer, but she also enjoyed a meal out or a decadent dessert. Lynda read voraciously. She loved spending the coldest months of the year in Florida with her snowbird friends. She lit up whenever family came to visit. Her brilliant smile and generous nature will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
She was preceded in death by parents Arne and Emily Lehtinen, sister Sandra Matanich, brother-in-law Peter Matanich, and parents-in-law Carl and Kay Meirick.
She is survived by her husband, Mike Meirick of St. Cloud; sons Patrick (Chris McDougall) Meirick, Norman, OK, and Robert (Heather) Meirick, Zeeland, MI; sister Barbara (Richard) Ollila, Maple Grove; brothers Roger (Jo) Lehtinen, Arvada, CO, and John Lehtinen of Bovey; sister-in-law Johanna (Jim) Gilsdorf, Rice Lake, WI; three grandchildren; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
Memorials may be made to Coborn Cancer Center through CentraCare Health Foundation.
