He was raised on the family farm near St. Joseph and joined the U.S. Army in January 1942. He served his country during WWII in the Italian and Tunisian Campaigns. During his service he was awarded the Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal, European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal and the Oak Leaf Cluster. He was honorably discharged in 1945 and returned home. He married Bernice C. Fiereck on June 26, 1952 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sauk Rapids. Wally was employed at the VA Medical Center in St. Cloud shortly after his military service to his retirement. He was a member of St. Michael's Parish.
Wally and Bernice were avid gardeners who meticulously cared for a large flower garden. They traveled to all 48 states and all the way across Canada. Wally was an ingenious man who could build anything that he couldn't buy.
He is survived by his brother, Norbert (Virginia) Fiedler of Rice; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Bernice in 2002; brothers and sister, Benedict, Herman, Margaret Martin, Albert and Raymond.
A special thank you is given to the staff of the VA Medical Center and the St. Cloud Hospital for their professional and compassionate care.
