Alcuin M. Scherer, 83

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, June 19, 2014 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Cold Spring, MN for Alcuin Michael Scherer, age 83, who died Friday at the St. Cloud Veteran Administration Hospital. Burial will be in the St. Boniface Parish Cemetery.
Relatives and friends may call from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, June 18th at the Wenner Funeral Home in Cold Spring. Parish Prayers will be at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will continue from 9:00 - 10:00 a.m., Thursday morning at the funeral home.
Alcuin was born in St. Joseph, MN to Mathias and Elizabeth (Lahr) Scherer. He married Vera Ann Backes on December 28, 1954 in St. Boniface Catholic Church in Cold Spring, MN. He served in the U.S. Air Force
from 1950 to 1970 as a pilot on multi-engine airplanes; retiring at the rank of Major. Alcuin then worked at Sears for 20 years. He loved the outdoors, especially snowmobiling and camping. In retirement he helped out at Kandiyohi County Park #7 (Games Lake). He was active in numerous organizations, especially Cold Spring Lions Club and Reserve Officers Assoc. Alcuin was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars
and the Cold Spring American Legion.
Survivors include his children, Valery (Gary) Hansen of Cold Spring, Kathy (Steve) Lambrecht of Richmond, and Andrew (Fotini Kondyli) of Providence, RI; siblings, Marcelline Rueter, Elmer Scherer, Francis Scherer, Jenrose (Linus) Kalthoff, Veronica Adelman, Helen (Kenneth) Heinen; in-laws, Margaret Scherer, Vivian Backes, Wally (Mary) Backes, Willard (Bernie) Backes, Allen (Marcy) Backes, Jean (John) Becker, Mary (Edward) Cotter; grandchildren, Jeremiah (Holly) Scherer, Beth (Steven) Dedic, Kyle and Leigh Jaeger, Beau (Jackie) Hansen, Allison (Chad) Schilplin, Ashley (Jake) Oravetz, Amanda Hansen, Garret Scherer, and 7 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Vera (December 2005); son, Don (May 2002); siblings, Dolores Trettel, Cyril Scherer, Bernelda (Rodney) Lenzmeier; in-laws, Julius Rueter, Jim Trettel, Marlys Scherer, Genny Scherer, Irvin Adelman, Daniel Backes, and Timothy Backes.
