Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, December 19, 2011 at St. Stephen's Catholic Church in St. Stephen for Alex R. Smoley, 91, of St. Stephen who passed away on Friday, December 16, 2011 at Country Manor Care Center in Sartell. Reverend Robert Harren will officiate. Burial with military honors will take place in the parish cemetery.

Family and friends may call from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Sunday and after 9:30 a.m. on Monday at St. Stephen's Parish Hall in St. Stephen. The St. Cloud Fourth Degree Father Pierz Assembly Knights of Columbus Council #530 will stand honor guard from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and parish prayers will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday at the parish hall. Arrangements are with the Daniel Funeral Home in Sartell.

Alex was born on September 17, 1920 in St. Stephen, Minnesota to Gregor and Mary (Supan) Smoley. He served with the U.S. Navy SeaBees during WWII in the South Pacific, building airbases. He married Anna Mae Pohlman on November 24, 1943 in Gulfport, Mississippi. After the military he returned to St. Stephen where he farmed for many years. He also worked with the Civilian Conservation Corps., excavating and construction with Megarry Brothers, Hardrives, Albers Construction and J.F. Donovan, Inc. Alex spent his retirement years taking care of his yard and restoring cars. He was a member of St. Stephen's Catholic Church and Men's Society, Knights of Columbus Bishop Trobec Council #5276, St. Cloud Fourth Degree Father Pierz Assembly #530, the St. Cloud Eagle's Aerie #622 and a lifetime member of the St. Stephen American Legion Post #221.

Alex is survived by his wife, Anna Mae of Sartell; children, Don Smoley of St. Stephen, Ray (Anita) of St. Stephen, Kristine Smoley (Bob Schlicht) of St. Cloud; son-in-law, John (Nancy) Melancon of St. Joseph; grandchildren, Maggie (Mike) Calhoun, Mike (Emily) Melancon, Toni Melancon, Jay Melancon, Sandy (Bo) Stern, Brad (Andrea) Scheppler, Kari (Will) Topka, Noelle (Heath) Schubert, Sarah Smoley, Ashley Smoley, Hope Schlicht, Troy Schlicht; and great grandchildren, Brooke, Abby, Claire, Sylvie, Nathan and Aaron.

He was preceded in death by his daughters, Carol Melancon and Bonita Scheppler; brothers, Mike, Art, Tony and Louis; and sisters, Julia Danzl and Marcella Currie.
