Gordon "Gordy" I. Nelson, 92

Memorial Services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 31, 2014 at Williams Dingmann Family Funeral Home, Sauk Rapids for Gordon I. Nelson, age 92, who passed away Thursday at his home. Rev. Al Stangl will officiate and entombment will be at Hilltop Mausoleum, Sauk Rapids. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services.
Gordon was born July 20, 1921 in Brooten to Gilbert & Ida (Kjeldahl) Nelson. He served in the U.S. Army in three theaters during WWII
and was injured in the Battle of the Bulge. Gordy married Ruth Veltikold on Sept. 6, 1945 in Munson Lake. He worked for 20 years as a guard at the St. Cloud Correctional Facility and managed Travelers on the Mississippi as well as Carefree Country Club in Big Lake. Gordy was a former member of Salem Lutheran Church in St. Cloud. He was a member of Sauk Rapids American Legion Post #254, and a life member of St. Cloud East Side VFW
Post #4847 and the DAV. Gordy enjoyed dancing, bowling, hunting, fishing, playing cards, camping, traveling, and riding motorcycle.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth of Sauk Rapids; children, Ginger (Dana) O'Brien of Rice, Sharon (Ervin) Kosloski of Merrifield, Rod (Kay) Nelson of Farmington, and Barb (Craig) Leerberg of Colorado Springs, CO; sister, Ardis Morris of Brainerd; 14 grandchildren; 28 great grandchildren; and 2 great great grandchildren. Gordon was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Connie Desmond; step brother, Noble (Toby) Nelson; and step sister, Bella Nelson.
