The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, November 13, 2013, at the Sacred Heart Chapel, Saint Benedict's Monastery, St. Joseph, Minn., for Sister John Bernard Plantenberg, who died on November 10, 2013, at St. Cloud Hospital, St. Cloud, Minn. Burial will be in the monastery cemetery. Friends may call at Saint Scholastica Convent on Tuesday, November 12, 2013, from 1-6 p.m., or for a Vigil Prayer Service at 7 p.m. at Saint Benedict's Monastery. Visitation continues at 9 a.m. until the time of the funeral.

S. John Bernard (Bernice) Plantenberg was born September 8, 1922, to John and Theresia (Klein) Plantenberg in Richmond, Minn. She attended District #28 Public School and Public High School in Richmond, Cathedral High School, St. Cloud, and St. Boniface High School, Cold Spring, Minn., where she graduated. On November 13, 1941, she entered Saint Benedict's Monastery, was received into the novitiate on July 2, 1942, made first monastic profession on July 11, 1943, and perpetual monastic profession on July 11, 1946.

S. John Bernard earned a B.A. degree in history with a minor in philosophy at the College of Saint Benedict, St. Joseph, Minn.; an M.A. in history from Marquette University, Milwaukee, Wis.; and was certified in information media from St. Cloud State University. She also attended Mount Mary College, Milwaukee, Wis.; University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, and the University of St. Thomas, St. Paul, Minn.

In her career as a teacher, S. John Bernard taught the upper grades in Stillwater, Minn. She taught history at Cathedral High School, St. Cloud (1947-1963 and 1971-1977); Pierz High School, Pierz, Minn. (1963-1966); and Saint Benedict's High School, St. Joseph (1966-1971). As well as teaching history, S. John Bernard taught typing and, in addition, served as principal at Pierz High School. In 1977, she began parish work in Excelsior, Minn. Here she served in a variety of roles: media coordinator; parish secretary; parish worker; and in the religious education program. She later moved to Melrose, Minn., where she served as pastoral assistant. In 1993, S. John Bernard returned to Saint Benedict's Monastery where she served as receptionist and driver, gave tours of the chapel and sacred spaces, and was Befriender training supervisor in St. Joseph parish.

S. John Bernard is survived by her Benedictine community, her brother, Bernard, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by brothers: Edmund, Leander, Norbert, infants Harold and John, Clarence, Arthur and Levern; and by her sisters: Adela Krom, Irene Pfannenstein and Lucille Straus.
