Norman F. Clarke, age 84, St. Paul, MN, formerly of St. Cloud, MN and Sun City West, AZ, died Thursday, February 14, 2013 at Unity Hospital, Fridley, MN.
A celebration of his life will be on March 9th at 11am at Presbyterian Church of the Way, 3382 N. Lexington Ave. Shoreview, MN. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church with lunch to follow. Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery, Roseville, MN at a future date. Funeral arrangements were made by Benson Funeral Home, St. Cloud, MN.
Norman was born May 7, 1928 in St. Paul, MN to Norman E. and Katharine Lee (Hall) Clarke. He graduated with degrees in journalism and library science from Indiana University
and the University of Minnesota
, and served as a Lieutenant in the United States Army during the Korean War
, where he was awarded the Purple Heart
Norman was a Professor of Library Science at St. Cloud State University, working in the Learning Resource Center as a business reference librarian for 24 years, retiring in 1996. He was a member of the Rotary Club, Sauk Rapids American Legion Post #254, St. Cloud VFW Post #428, a life member of the Military Order of the World Wars and a member of Presbyterian Church of the Way. He had served as both Elder and Deacon in various Presbyterian churches.
Norman was a life long enthusiast of narrow gauge railroads, documenting his passionate pursuit of all North American NGRR lines on his website http://www.ngrrlines.com/

He was the author of "The Recreation and Entertainment Industries, An Information Sourcebook" as well as the editor of "Logsleds to Snowmobiles: a Centennial History of Pine River, Minnesota, 1873-1973." An avid player of golf and bridge, he enjoyed a good laugh, an interesting book, a fine meal and could never pass up a debate on politics. His love of history, ideas and people will be sorely missed.
Survivors include daughters, Jean Marie (Richard) Darnell of St. Paul, MN; Christina Clarke of Amherst, MA; and Katharine Clarke of Newton, MA; brother, Rev. James (Laurene) Clarke of Aberdeen, SD; three grandchildren, John Norman Holder, Thomas Ward Holder and Maryruth Jia-Xiang Darnell; step-children, Peter (Connie) Stier of St. Cloud, MN, Tim (Sue) Stier of Cape Coral, FL, Alec (Kay) Stier of Auburn, CA, and Laurie (Michael) Daniel of Bedford, VA; eight step grandchildren; and eight step great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Howard; and one step grandchild.
