A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. on Monday, September 23, 2013 at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Duelm for Richard C. "Dick" Witschen, age 78, of Sauk Rapids who passed away on Wednesday, September 18, 2013 in the comfort of his home with his loved ones near. Dick had been battling Mesothelioma for the past 10 months. Reverend Virgil Helmin will officiate. Inurnment will take place with military honors at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery, Little Falls.
Family and friends may call from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Sunday at the Daniel Funeral Home in St. Cloud and after 9:30 a.m. on Monday at the church. Parish prayers will be at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home in St. Cloud.
Dick was born on December 29, 1934 in St. Cloud, Minnesota to Clarence and Arline (Hopke) Witschen. He graduated from Cathedral High School in 1952. Dick proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps
from 1953 until 1956. It was in the Marine Corps that Dick met and married the love of his life, Mary "Kay" Womeldorf on April 22, 1955 at the Marine Corps Base in San Diego, California. When he returned to St. Cloud he followed his father's footsteps and served on the St. Cloud Police Department from 1956 until he retired as Assistant Chief in 1981. Dick was a graduate of the FBI National Academy in Virginia. He was appointed Sherburne County Sheriff in 1981 and was re-elected until his retirement in 1995. Dick was involved in dirt track racing for many years and co-owned the Golden Spike Speedway in Sauk Rapids. He was a member of St. Lawrence Parish, Minnesota State Sheriff's Association, St. Cloud Police Retired Association, Minnesota Police and Peace Officers Association, Sauk Rapids American Legion Post #254, St. Cloud Eagle Aerie #622 and a life member of Marine Corps League Valhalla Detachment #171.
Anyone who was a friend or co-worker of Dick knows he dedicated his life to helping others. To his loved ones he was a great man, husband, father and grandfather.
Dick is survived by his wife of 58 years, Kay; son, Clarence of Fort Ripley; daughters, Cindy (Don) Boelz and Kathy (Tim) Bogen both of St. Cloud; six grandchildren, Shane, Daniel, Michael, Stevie Lou, Tessa and Shawn; two great grandchildren; and sister, Audrey Lommel of St. Cloud.
He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Denise McIntyre and sister, Jeanette Baldwin.
