Melvin passed away peacefully at Hilltop Care Center in Watkins, MN. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, December 31, 2012 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Kimball, MN Visitation is one hour prior to service. Burial will be held privately at Fort Snelling Cemetery. Arrangements have been entrusted to Williams Dingmann Family Funeral Home, Eden Valley.
Mel was born August 22, 1928 on a farm near Lidgerwood, ND. After graduating from high school, he served in the Army in Korea from 1946 - 1948. He married Betty Lou Grobe November 13, 1950. Mel worked at Ford Motor Company for 30 years retiring in 1984. He was an active member of the United Auto Workers Union (UAW) and served as financial secretary for many years. He was also a member of the South St. Paul VFW and the Eden Valley American Legion. Mel enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, sports, and playing cards. His favorite times were spent with his family. Mel and Betty spent 50 years living in South St. Paul where he was an active member of Concordia Lutheran Church. Mel and Betty later settled in Eden Valley. Mel enjoyed many years on Eden Lake.
Mel is survived by his wife, Betty; children, Jayne Conrad of Eden Valley, Debra Burgwald (Roger) of Cottage Grove, Nancy Lindell of Richmond, Thomas Kackman (Elizabeth) of Burnsville, Barbara Anderson (Gary) of Amelia Island, FL, and Linda Reff (Scott) of Lino Lakes; 13 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren; sisters, Grace Kackman and Eleanor Olson; brother-in-law, Norm Grobe and his wife Carol; and many nieces and nephews. Mel was preceded in death by his parents, Otto and Ella Kackman; brother, Gordon; sisters, Loretta, Dorothy Diekow, Delores Elznic; and grand-daughter, Sara Burgwald.
His ready hand shake and quick wit will be missed by many. Our family wishes to thank Hilltop Care Center for their respectful and kind care of Mel during his stay there.
