Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, October 18, 2012 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Rice for Thomas J. Saldaña Sr., age 86, of Rice, who died Saturday at his home after a battle with lung cancer. Rev. Tim Wenzel will officiate and burial will be in the parish cemetery. Friends and relatives may call from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at Williams Dingmann Family Funeral Home in Sauk Rapids and one hour prior to the services Thursday at the church in Rice. Parish prayers will be 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home in Sauk Rapids.

Tom was born November 21, 1925 in Rice to Albert & Anna (Heim) Saldaña. He married Marian Damm on April 24, 1948 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Rice. Tom spent all of his life in Rice. He was a blacksmith and welder for Burlington Northern Railroad for 37 years, retiring in 1986. Tom took up beekeeping with his son as a hobby, and bartended at Sebasky's Bar in his younger days. Tom was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Rice, the Knights of Columbus and the Rice Sportsman's Club. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, working in the fields, Sunday dinners, traveling, cards and good food. He was a Minnesota Twins fan, was very helpful and enjoyed the simple things in life. Tom had a sweet tooth, and was gentle, kind, sensitive and proud of his family. He was well respected in the community and proud of his Mexican heritage.

Tom is survived by his loving wife Marian of 64 years; children, Jan (Gerald) Solarz of Rice, Tom Jr. of Ontario, CA, Sharon (David) Truchinski of Coon Rapids, Joel of Rice and Jodi (Jerry) Heinen of Sauk Rapids; grandchildren, Leah, James, Jordan, Jill, Jennifer, Justa, Tyler, Jeffrey, Trisha and Jonah; great grandchildren, Abigail, Noah and Daniel and brothers, Anthony and Phillip, both of Rice.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Jimmy in 1979; daughter, JoAnne Rajkowski in 1990; grandson, Jared Rajkowski in 1982; and brothers, Peter, Albert, George, Victor and John Saldaña.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.

A special thank you to St. Cloud Hospital Home Care and Hospice for all of their care given to Tom, especially Tami Unger, Becky Olson and Tammy Studenski.
