Vernon Wilke, age 92, of Foley, died Friday, August 30, 2013 at the St. Cloud Hospital surrounded by his family.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, September 4, 2013 at St. John's Catholic Church, Foley. The Rev. Daniel Walz will officiate. Burial will be in the Parish Cemetery with Military Honors provided by the Foley American Legion, Post 298.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 Tuesday at the Foley Funeral Home in Foley and after 9 a.m. Wednesday at the Foley Funeral Home. Parish Prayers will be at 6 pm Tuesday at the funeral home. Arrangements were made by the Foley Funeral Home.
Vernon Wilke was born November 24, 1920 in Maywood Township, Benton Co., Minnesota to Otto and Frances (Wruck) Wilke. He married Eileen Holter on December 6, 1944 at St. Louis Catholic Church, Foreston, MN. He was a US Navy Veteran of WWII serving as a 3rd Class Gunners Mate on a Navy supply ship in the Atlantic and Pacific Theaters. He served from 1942 until his Honorable discharge in 1946. The couple lived and farmed in Maywood Township most of their lives before moving to Foley in 1995. Vernon enjoyed nature, traveling, playing cards and dancing. Mostly, Vernon enjoyed spending time with his family. He was a life member of the Foley American Legion and Gilman VFW and was a member of St. John's Catholic Church. Memorials can be sent to the Coborn Cancer Center. The family wishes to thank the Coborn Cancer Center and the St. Cloud Hospital for all their care and concern for Vernon.
He is survived by his daughters; Kathryn Wilke, St. Cloud; Barbara (Kenneth) Emde, Woodbury; 2 grandsons; Scott (Cassie) Anderson, Oak Park; Steve (fiancé, Becky Spencer), Yuma, AZ and step-grandson, Brian Emde of Woodbury and step-great grandaughter, Abby Bednar.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Eileen, March 31, 2002, brother, Albert and sisters, Eleanor Gregory, Lorraine O'Konek and Pauline Lauer.
