John J. Schmitt, 100

Avon

October 31, 1913 - June 6, 2014

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 13, 2014 at St. Benedict's Catholic Church in Avon for John J. Schmitt, age 100, of Avon who passed away Friday at Mother of Mercy nursing home in Albany.  Rev. Blane Wasnie, OSB will officiate and burial will be in the parish cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to services on Friday at the church. Arrangements have been entrusted to Williams Dingmann Family Funeral Home in Avon.

John was born October 31, 1913 to Joseph and Katherine (Fuchs) Schmitt in Jacobs Prairie. On September 14, 1944 John married Marie Merdan at St. Benedict's Catholic Church in Avon.  The couple lived in Farming Township and farmed for 33 years. During the 1970's, John served on the Farming Township board for nine years.  He worked predominately as a forklift operator at Franklin before retiring after many years of service. John was a member of St. Benedict's Catholic Church, Catholic Aid for 35 years, Avon Seniors and Catholic Order Foresters for 80 years.  He enjoyed 20 years as a member of the Albany Pioneer Club; where he loved to drive old Rumbly Oil Pull Tractors.  John loved fishing and grafting apple trees, making new varieties of apples.

John is survived by many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Marie; brothers, Alphonse, Nick, Roman; and sisters, Alma and Sr. Leonarda Schmitt, OSF.

In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to Mother of Mercy Nursing home and Assisted Living in Albany.
