Miltiades Vargelis Obituary

OGUNQUIT - Miltiades C. Vargelis, When asked "what do you want in your obituary?" He said "Why waste the money. Just tell one person in Ogunquit and everyone will know!" Milt wasn't "big" on talking about death and dying. A private man when it came to his personal life, he asked that no one know about his valiant pursuit to stay alive. True to his unique character, Milt procrastinated for as long as he possibly could before leaving us.

Sometime in the morning on November 28, 2018, Milt quietly passed away with his devoted friend Angel at his side. We were in my home in Wells, where we celebrated every holiday together and where Alana and Christian Kelley grew up. The two children (daughter and son) he proudly raised as his own. This is where we all learned the true meaning of family.

Milt loved to travel when he could be pulled away from his true passion, "work." A longtime resident of Ogunquit, Milt made his mark as the owner of Charlie's Restaurant and The Neptune Inn at Ogunquit Beach.

Those who truly knew him will remember his generosity, dedication to his patrons, faithful employees and friends, and his trust in his son-in-law Marko, not only to take his first "time off" ever from work, but to guide his granddaughter who will arrive in January, on earth, as he guides us all from above. Oh, and…The Best French Fries anywhere!

He was predeceased by his mother and father Dionesia and Constantine Vargelis and survived by his brother Jim, sister Niki and their children.

Graveside service at Oakdale Cemetery in Sanford will be made for the spring of 2019 with a celebration of his life to follow. Donations in his name could be made to Greenpeace 702 H Street NW, Suite 300 Washington, DC 20001, or Animal Welfare Society, P.O. Box 43, West Kennebunk, ME 04094 or a charity of your choice. Go Pats!

Not sure what to say?

Milty was the best first boss there could be! I am overwhelmed with sadness hearing of his passing. I have wonderful memories of my years in Ogunquit with him and Jerry Bradley. I pray that you have found Peace over the years and that only fond memories remain.

Milt was a great guy. Needing to clear my head in 1988, I spent the spring, summer and fall at my second home in Wells.
I met Milt and Angle who hired me to work various shifts at Charlies.
Those months were some of the most memorable times of my life.
We had so much fun working for Milt.
I left that fall with a much clearer head and was able to pursue a successful career and life.
Thank you Milt. Rest in Peace.

Milty, Many thanks for all our chats at VFM and Charlie's, all the ice cream samples, the great burgers and fries, and for hiring me when I needed a job the summer my car broke down.I enjoyed working with you and your great crew in the great fresh air! It was certainly different not seeing you around last summer, and will be for many to come, but you're right to trust in the leadership of Marko, also Alana, Christian and Angel. And how exciting to hear of a new granddaughter! My sympathies to all of you.God bless you Milty.God bless you all and keep you strong at this sad time.

Psalm 90:10 says that the days of our years are 70 years, And if because of special mightiness they are 80 years.
May the memories of the wonderful times you shared together bring a smile and joy in your heart.

Milt was a great man who was forever working at the place he owned and loved,The Neptune Inn in Ogunquit. Great guy to have a conversation with!! It will be a BIG void without Milt around the inn and his snack bar. All the best to his family and Marko and Alana which I consider friends of mine. May you rest in peace Milt. We have lost a great man!!! Les

I would like to offer my deepest sympathy to family and friends. It's times like these when the loving promises of our Heavenly Father God such as knowing that we can see our loved ones again as said in John 6:40 give us comfort and hope.

Milt and I shared a love of the ocean and Ogunquit for over fifty years. I had the pleasure of knowing his brother and sister and his parents over the years, and I admired his dedication and hard work involving The Neptune, Charlie's and the soft- serve ice cream shop for so many years.
Ogunquit Beach will never be the same. I will miss my dear friend.

Milt is as much a memory for my family as the sand and sun on Ogunquit Beach. Not a summer went by that we didn't spend as guests at the Neptune. We were warmly welcomed first by Charlie and then by Milt. Although, Milt was a contemporary with whom we had a friendship. It saddens all of us that he is gone too soon. Our deepest sympathies to you all. We share in your loss.
