Irving Davenport Smith, Jr.

Lifelong Seattle resident and beloved Father and Grandfather Irving "Pete" D. Smith, Jr., passed away on May 25, 2013 at the age of 93. He was born January 11, 1920 to Irving D. and Viola G. (Bock) Smith. He graduated from Queen Ann High school in 1938. Irving was a proud QA alumnus attending reunions for many years. During high school he was a member of the Sea Scouts aboard the "S.S.S Rainbow" inspiring his love of sailing.

Irving worked for Pecks Oil then later as a journeyman sheet metal worker for Todd's Shipyard Seattle before joining the United States Coast Guard Reserve during WWII. He served as a Coxswain aboard the USCG Cutter "Woodbine" active in the Pacific Theater.

After the war he graduated from the University of Washington and UW Law School. Passing the Bar in 1953, Irving joined Arthur E. Campbell-Husted Company Independent Insurance Adjusters. He became a partner and then President, remaining active until his retirement in 2011. Irving was a member of the Washington State Bar Association earning his 50 year membership tribute in 2003. He was a life member of the King County Bar Association, a member of the National Independent Insurance Adjusters Association, the Seattle Casualty Adjusters Association and the Marine Adjusters Association. He was a life member of the Honorable Blue Goose Int'l, the local VFW chapter 3063 and the Disabled American Veterans.

Irving enjoyed living in the Pacific Northwest with all of its recreational activities including fishing, sailing, camping and skiing. He was an accomplished equestrian winning numerous ribbons and trophies in the Seattle area.

Irving truly enjoyed traveling. Work and pleasure took him too many locations in the United States and Europe where he made many lifelong friends.

A loving and devoted father and Grandfather, Irving shared his humor, his interests and expertise with his children and grandchildren always taking great pride in their individual accomplishments.

Preceded in death by wife Carole A., Irving is survived by daughters; Pamela C. Smith, Abbie M. Poynter and son-in-law Skip, grandchildren Melissa C. Smith, Mitchell S. Poynter and great-grandson, Rylan D. Hodges. He is also survived by his sister Joan Smith-Lawrence (Texas), a niece and two nephews and their families.

On Saturday June 29, 2013 there will be a celebration of life memorial between 1:00 - 4:00 PM at the Innis Arden Clubhouse in Shoreline, WA following a private interment at Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Seattle.

Our family appreciates the many friends, neighbors and caregivers who supported and enriched our Father's life. In lieu of flowers a memorial donation may be made to the USO or VFW or a charity of your choice.

Uncle Pete was a lively spirit. I have many, many memories of PeCaPaAb, Innis Arden, Holidays, Visits, hearing many "stories" in later years. I loved him and miss him greatly.
