Leontina Scrivanich Obituary

Leontina "Lee" Brita Scrivanich

8/29/1929 ~ 1/31/2013

Leontina Scrivanich, age 83, passed away in her home on January 31, 2013. Lee was born August 29, 1929 in Enumclaw, Washington to Pete and Martha Peterson, both immigrants from Sweden. She graduated from Ballard High School and went on to earn a degree in Education at the University of Washington. Soon after, Lee met and fell in love with her lifetime soul mate, Patrick Scrivanich. The two married and lived for a year in Germany while Pat served in the United States Army. During that time, Lee courageously traveled on her own to Pat's remote home on the island of Susak in Croatia. When they returned Stateside, Pat and Lee began their careers and family in the Seattle area.

Lee worked tirelessly raising three kids and supporting Pat's business while teaching junior high Spanish and French. She is remembered by many for her voracious reading and home-made bread with jam. She was skilled at sewing, knitting, crocheting, and gardening and generously gave her works of art to those she loved. Lee had many interests including learning about and being involved with other cultures. Lee volunteered for civic organizations, the Seattle Arboretum, and for years drove cancer patients to appointments. Lee and Pat spent their 59 married years together traveling the world, gardening, dancing, hiking, swimming, and spending time with family and friends.

Lee is preceded in death by her husband Patrick, her parents, and five siblings. She is survived by her sister Mary Banyi, her children Claudia (and Steve) Hirschey, Larry (and Jane) Scrivanch, Diane (and Chris) Michel and her six grandchildren; Olivia and David Hirschey, Amy and Sam Scrivanich, and Alyssa and Riley Michel and numerous nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Leontina's name may be made to the Arboretum Foundation or the American Cancer Society. A celebration of life will take place at the Graham Visitor's Center in the University of Washington Arboreturm on Friday, March 1st at noon.

Not sure what to say?

We send condolenses to the family. There was little time we got to know Lee and her husband, but we were warmed by the special arrangement of plants around their property.

Dear Claudia and Family, I was saddened to learn of your mother's passing. When my dad was teaching junior high Spanish, I remember a couple of occasions when my family was invited over to your place and your parents shared their hospitality with us. It's sad when the time comes to say good-bye to our parents. We will always remember their lifelong lessons and influence in our lives. May your hearts find comfort and peace and may all your treasured memories bring you smiles and joy.

Claudia and family,
So sorry to hear about your mother's passing. I not only know you through our affliation with the Alpha Phi sorority at the U of W, but I knew your mom and dad through their involvement with the Sons of Norway Bothell Lodge. Thinking of you and send you my sympathies. May your many fond memories comfort you.

Señora Scrivanich, gracias. You made a big difference in my life through your teaching Spanish language and culture, and I will always be grateful for the opportunity you offered me to experience Mexico first hand. My sincere condolences to Claudia, Larry and Diane and your families. Que descanse en paz.
