Lloyd was a great friend and mentor to me. I think of him often. He had character, honesty and a dry wit. He lived a long and meaningful life.

All my prayers and best wishes to the Hammel family! I never had to chance to meet Lloyd, but after speaking to him over the phone just one time I could tell that he was an amazing individual. I'm attaching a picture of Freedom Square which is right next to the Purdue Armory. This was the project of the Iron Key class of 2011 and is dedicated to all the veterans who have come through the halls of Purdue. Despite being from a different generation, it gives me great pride to be able to call Lloyd my "brother"! Once a Boilermaker always a Boilermaker!

I had the pleasure of talking with Lloyd on several occasions when I was the commander of Purdue's Army ROTC program. Lloyd spoke at great length about his experiences and had so much pride in his Army service, his Purdue education and his family. He was a real joy to speak with, and, on behalf of the Purdue Army ROTC program, we thank him for his service to his country, and his wonderful example of a husband, father, friend and patriot.
