Kirsten, Eugene F. - Edmonds
Eugene F. Kirsten September 8, 1918 - January 16, 2015 Gene Kirsten was born in Seattle, son of Professor Frederick K. Kirsten and Agatha Kirsten. He grew up in the Mountlake area, attended Garfield High School and the University of Washington where he was a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity. He made lifelong friends there, as well as in Alaska where he worked summers in the fishing industry. He spent one winter tending a herring packing plant in Deep Cove, Alaska and treasured memories of the experience of being snowed-in, hunting and fishing with only the company of one other employee and a tough old tomcat. He had great stories, particularly about his adventures in Alaska, and loved sharing them. When WWII broke out, his poor eyesight left him unable to serve, but he worked for the Army in Juneau where he also enjoyed being a member of the volunteer fire department. They were paid one silver dollar if there was a fire, and two if they had to turn on the hoses. After the fires, they would play poker with their earnings. Alaska was a war zone then, and with the influx of young people working in the war effort, it was an interesting place to be. It was during this time that he met Betty Sharpe of Ketchikan and Juneau. They married in 1944. They later settled in Seattle and had two daughters, Sally and Lynne. The Kirstens owned and managed the Kirsten Pipe Company, begun by his father and developed into a viable business by Gene and Betty. They bought a view home in Blue Ridge where they could watch the ships headed to Alaska, and the occasional eagle flying by from Discovery Park. They volunteered in their community and enjoyed many friendships there and in Ballard where the business was located. Gene loved Ballard and his home in Seattle. He and Betty had many trips in the US, particularly Hawaii, and in Europe, and Mexico. Gene was always happiest fishing in Alaska, and made yearly trips there. Sally died in 1998 and Betty in 2006. Gene died in his sleep at the age of 96. He is survived by his daughter Lynne and her husband Antonio, niece Becky Janecke, grandchildren Stacy, Brian and Sara, and extended family in the Seattle area and McKenna, Pierce County. At his request, there will be no services. Please share memories at www.becksfuneralhome.com .
