Obituaries from the Past Week

Gilmour, Sarah Phelps Leavens - Santa Barbara
Sarah Phelps Leavens Gilmour Sarah Phelps Leavens Gilmour was born November 5, 1931, in Oxnard, CA, and died January 6, 2015, in Santa Barbara. She graduated from Wheaton College and studied at Princeton Seminary, where she met George Gilmour. Together they served Presbyterian churches in Casper, WY; Muskogee, OK; Fort Smith, AR; and Lake Burien Presbyterian Church, in Burien, WA. While in Seattle, she led the Presbyterian Women of the Synod of Alaska-Northwest. Warm, gentle, with lively curiosity and a quick sense of humor, beloved by family and friends, Sarah was a loyal friend, supporter of equality and tolerance, family historian, teacher, and faithful correspondent. She deeply appreciated music, and read widely and delighted in sharing items of interest with family and friends. She loved gardening, especially roses, orchids, and rhododendrons, and loved sharing flowers and fruit with others. Sarah made each person she met feel special and valued. Helping others, and making a difference in peoples' lives, was important to Sarah. She carefully tended relationships with family and friends including with foreign exchange students and lifelong pen pals. Sarah is survived by her husband, George H. Gilmour; their two children and spouses, Andrew Gilmour and Chris Cozadd, and Maureen Gilmour Cook and Jim Cook; and five grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister, Mary L. Schwabauer, and brother, Paul Leavens; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and their children. She was predeceased by a sister, Dr. Dorothy L. Carlson of Bellevue. A celebration of Sarah's life will be held at First Presbyterian Church, Santa Barbara, CA, on January 31, at 3:00 p.m. You are invited to sign Sarah's on line Guest Book at www.Legacy.com In lieu of flowers, the family suggests making memorial donations to Presbyterian Foundation, George H. and Sarah L. Gilmour Fund (Account Number 1020202006), 200 E. 12th St., Jeffersonville, IN 47130 (supports Presbyterian mission projects); Santa Barbara Symphony, 1330 State St., Ste. 102, Santa Barbara, CA 93101; or American Field Service (AFS)-USA Student Exchange Program, National Development Office, 120 Wall St., 4th Floor, New York, NY 10005.
