Katayama, Mitsuru "Mits" - Seattle
Mitsuru "Mits" Katayama Mits passed away peacefully on November 14, 2014, surrounded by his family. He was born near Sumner, WA on June 6, 1929. He grew up on the farm until WWII and internment at Minidoka Relocation Center in Idaho. After the war the family moved to Seattle where he graduated from Garfield H.S., art school followed, then service in the Army during the Korean war. After discharge he returned home to Seattle and married his sweetheart Kazzie and began raising his family. He started his career as a graphic designer working for a couple of outfits before going out on his own and becoming a member of Graphic Studios, made up of a talented group of independent young artists. Later on in his career he taught art classes at N. Seattle CC. He became a well known and respected artist and won numerous awards for his ads, logos, and book illustrations. One of his favorite projects was designing the signs for the children's zoo at Woodland Park. Art and design always seemed easy for him; he was blessed with the gift of talent. He loved to play golf and tennis with his buddies, and he shot a mean game of pool. He enjoyed watching sports on TV, especially the Seahawks, Mariners, and golf. Dad was gentle, soft spoken, humble, honest, and funny. He was always there when we needed him, always had our backs, and never let us down. He was a lovingly thoughtful husband, best dad, doting grandfather and good man. Mits is preceded in death by his father Masaki and mother Chima. He is survived by his wife Kazzie; sons Mark (Jan), Glenn, & Stevan; brother John (Joyce), and beloved granddaughter Sara, and numerous relatives. Private family services were held. Thank you, Dad. We will all miss you very much.

Kohler, Dwayne A. - Seattle
Dwayne A. Kohler Beloved husband, father and architect, Dwayne Kohler, passed away on November 7, 2014, after a long battle with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. More than anything, Dwayne wanted his life to reflect the heart of Christ. As such, he used his gift of architecture, which took root at age eight and culminated in his own firm (Kohler Associates, Architects & Planners) to create meaningful and beautiful spaces for neighbors and business owners throughout the greater Seattle area. He also crafted with words, often using prose and prayers as tools of healing. Silly jokes, warm hugs, a love of learning, and a strong moral compass marked Dwayne's ministry to his family. With his dear Marilyn, Dwayne enjoyed dancing, exploring the outdoors, supporting local theater and serving their church community. Dwayne is preceded in death by his mother, Dale; father, Elmer; and brother, Larry. He is survived by his wife, Marilyn; children, Karen (Troy), Krista (Jace) and Paul (Heather); grandchildren, (Kendall, Tristan, Malin, Hazel and Holden; brothers and sister, Carl, Mark, Preston and Dianna. Please join us on December 22nd at 1pm at University Presbyterian Church (Seattle) to help celebrate Dwayne's wonderful life. Please send any gifts to: Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation or World Vision.
