Age 84, of Coupevile, WA, passed away on November 13, 2012, at Providence Regional Medical Center, Everett, WA. Beloved husband, brother, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, cousin and world traveler left peacefully from his journey on this earth. Darla, his soul mate and wife was by his side to gently bid him adieu.
Art was born August 11, 1928, in Tacoma, WA to Martha Lloyd Albertson and Harold A. Allen, Sr. He grew up in Tacoma, WA attending Lowell Elementary and Clover Park High School, before leaving in 1945 to attend The Taft School in Watertown, CT. During this time at Taft he would often find his way off campus to head to Harlem to listen to all the great jazz and blues musicians of that era. At age 16 Art matriculated at Stanford and graduated with honors. In 1949 he received his B.A. in Political Science. He was a member of the Alpha Omega of Sigma Chi fraternity, as was his father.
At age 25 he was drafted into the U.S. Army and was stationed at Ford Ord, CA from 1953 - 1955. Art's "Insurance Training" began in San Francisco in 1949. He was an Insurance Agent at the Harold Allen Company, Tacoma, in 1950. In 1952 he began a 36 year career at United Pacific/Reliance as an Underwriter in Tacoma and then the Seattle office. In 1962 he was Branch Manager in Tacoma and in 1968 he was Branch Manager in Seattle. In 1971 he was named "Boss Of The Year" by the Insurance Women's Associate of Seattle. He was promoted to the Home Office in 1980 as Northern Region Vice President and in 1983 to Senior V.P. - Field Operations. His position at retirement was Senior V.P. - Marketing and Agency Operations.

In 1976 Art married Darla, his beloved wife, partner and travel companion for the ensuing decades. Dart, as they were affectionately known, soon took to escaping the grays of winter to relax in Maui each year. Art and Darla traveled through North America, Europe and Asia, sparking, kindling and rekindling relationships with friends all over the globe. One such relationship with Sonny and Macky Wong found them opening a Congee/Noodle shop on Hong Kong Island and subsequently becoming part of their wonderful Hong Kong families. They also later became partners in Seattle's International District restaurant "China Gate".
After retirement Art and Darla built a home on the shore of Whidbey Island with a breathtaking view of the Olympic Mountains, the ship traffic on Puget Sound and Port Townsend. Many special times were enjoyed throughout the year at their beach home with family and friends. The holidays are upon us and our loss of Art will cause a great deal of wistful gazing at holiday tables and decorations. We know however, Art is charting a course we are all blessed to follow.
