Josef Abramson

Josef Abramson

Josef (Joey) Abramson, 44, co-founder of The Fitness Outlet, husband, and father of four young children, passed away peacefully in the arms of his family on July 15, 2013, after a courageous battle with cancer. Though his life was cut short, he accomplished much. He will be remembered as a man of integrity, intelligence, and compassion who was devoted to his family, his countless friends, and his community. Joey's welcoming smile and sparkling blue eyes were but a few of the remarkable traits that he passed on to his young children.

Born on December 31, 1968, in Yaffo, Israel, Joey and his family moved to New York in 1969. Joey grew up in Brooklyn and graduated from the highly regarded Flatbush Yeshiva in 1986. From there he moved to California to attend California State University, Northridge.

Shortly after college, he and Avi Freedman, a childhood friend, founded The Fitness Outlet, a retail fitness business. Their business flourished and they expanded into multiple stores throughout California and Washington, ultimately leading Joey to Seattle. In Seattle he met the love of his life, Jessica Friedberg, and they delighted in their growing family: Elyse Rice (11), Elan (5), Eliot (3), and Evi (18 months). Jessica and Joey made their home on Mercer Island where they were deeply involved in the Jewish community and surrounded by a close-knit group of supportive friends.

In addition to his family and friends, Joey was passionate about travel and about his business. He had an entrepreneurial spirit that was enriched by his involvement in EO (Entrepreneur's Organi-zation), a global network of successful business owners.

Joey will be remembered by his family and friends for his loyalty and his calm, sensible advice. He always made himself available with a ready ear and a thoughtful suggestion. He made meaningful contributions to his community and touched the lives of many. He will be deeply missed.

In addition to his wife and children, Joey is survived by his parents Aviva and Dan Abramson; his brothers Oren (Shelley), Yaron, Leore (Frieda); and by his other cherished family and in-laws, both here and in Israel, who have been a very special part of his life.

A service will be held at Herzl-Ner Tamid (3700 E. Mercer Way, Mercer Island) on July 17, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. Burial to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Abramson Children Educational Fund: Merrill Lynch (ref.# 42G18454), 23350 North Pima Road, Scottsdale, AZ 85255.
