Josephine R. Abitz

Josephine R. Abitz, 89, of Kendrick, passed away Aug. 26, 2013, at Life Care Center of Lewiston. She was born May 22, 1924, to George and Hazel (Page) Sweeney in Aberdeen, Wash. Her parents divorced when she was 7 and Jo and her sister Frances were placed in the Sacred Heart Orphanage for five years.

She married Vernice Adkins at age 16; they later divorced. She married Lawrence Abitz June 28, 1943, in Seattle. Larry and Jo built their house in White Center near Seattle and lived there until he died. Jo helped in the school cafeteria for many years and Larry was a welder. They were active members of St. James Lutheran Church in Seattle and would faithfully take tapes of the services to shut-ins. After Larry died Jan. 6, 2004, Jo moved to Kendrick to live with her son and daughter-in-law, John and Mary Abitz.

Jo is survived by her daughter Donna Burkhart of Renton, Wash.; sons, John Abitz (Mary) of Kendrick and Steve Abitz of Seattle; grandsons Richard Birch of Tucson, Ariz.; Mark Lindstad and Eric Burkhart, both of Renton, Wash.; granddaughters Tammie Steiner of Mount Vernon, Wash.; Sonja Abitz of Kendrick, Karen Child of Clarkston and Beth Serenbetz of Seattle; and six great-grandchildren Jacob, Shawn, Emily, Railynn, Mailey and Logan.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Lawrence J. Abitz; grandson Brian Abitz; sisters Mary Labensky and Frances Burgh; and brother Robert Sweeney.

Graveside services will be Saturday, September 14th at Washington Memorial Park, SeaTac, Washington at 1:00 p.m.
