Joy Ann Holberg CAREY
Joy Ann Holberg Carey was born May 1, 1930 to parents Wilma Roberta Butcher and Alverne Louis Holberg. She passed away July 14, 2013. While attending the University of Washington
she met the love of her life John Carey. They celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary this year. Her accounting degree soon gave way to raising a family.
Joy had a passion for architecture and a hobby of drawing house plans. She won an Honorable Mention in a Seattle Home Show home design competition in 1953. She designed and built two homes. She was particularly proud of her last home which she designed as totally level with no steps or barriers for them to live in as they aged.
Joy and John travelled extensively both in the U.S. and abroad. This introduced Joy to genealogy which she enjoyed researching for both of them. Her grandparents had come from Norway and Joy and John met and were welcomed by many distant cousins there. Joy had a fondness for all things English and they took several trips to England also looking up John's ancestry. They loved tea and afternoon tea was always a treat. All of the children and grandchildren loved to go to their house for tea.
Joy and John enjoyed sailing their boat christened "JOY". They joined the Seattle Yacht Club and had many years of enjoyment sailing with their children and grandchildren.
Joy was a loving mother and grandmother and she will be deeply missed. She is survived by her daughters Julie Lawrence (Joseph), Jan Horman (Steve) and son Jay Carey (Peggy), grandchildren Jeffrey, Jenny, Jamie, John, Kevin, Marie, Kelly and Ashley, and great granddaughters Madeline and Kenley.
Private graveside services were held by the family.
