LeRoy Drake

LeRoy Drake, age 74, passed peacefully on July 11, 2013. The late Harry and Annie Drake were blessed with a beloved son, LeRoy on April 15, 1939. He was one of the first African American students to integrate Father Ryan High School in Nashville, TN. After graduating from Father Ryan he continued his education at Tennessee State University where he earned his bachelor's degree in 1962. He enjoyed a highly successful career. He began his work as a high school teacher in Poolsville, Maryland. He worked with United Planning in Washington D.C. and at Meharry Medical College where he worked in financial planning. After moving to Seattle, WA he continued his career in education with SOIC, Edmonds School District, and retired from Seattle Community Colleges as the Chancellor's Executive Assistant for Partnerships in 2010. He was united in holy matrimony to the late Barbara Drake in June of 1960. Leroy loved life and lived life to its fullest. He enjoyed cooking and was very well known for his infamous peach cobbler and bar-b-que. He also loved to entertain family and friends and show the wonderful sites of the city. LeRoy continuously encouraged young adults to excel in education and reach for the stars. He is survived by his daughter, Dyla (Abon) Taylor; sons, Davon, Darris, Sr., and Danon Drake of Everett, WA; grandsons, Abon III and Anthony Taylor, Darris, Jr., Tracey, Taylor, Terrance, and Garret Drake; sisters, Uthey Drake of Dayton Ohio, Sally Dunn of Renton, WA, and Margaret Foster of Nashville, TN.

Services were held on July 18, 2013 at St. Vincent De Paul Catholic Church in Nashville, TN. Arrangements entrusted to N.J. Ford and Sons Funeral Home (901) 948-7755.
