Margaret Ellen Hatch Hyre
Margaret Ellen Hatch Hyre passed away January 14, 2013 at the age of 98 at her Seattle home West of Greenlake, where she had lived for 67 years. Margaret was born September 12, 1914 in Spokane, Washington. She attended Lewis and Clark High School and sang in the downtown Methodist Church Choir under the direction of Walter Mather.
Margaret attended the University of Washington
, where she earned her place as first chair trumpet in the University Band. She subsequently graduated from Success Business College and became a teacher there, teaching English, Shorthand and Typing. In July of 1938 she married George Wardell Hyre, and in 1941 gave birth to their son Kary Wilson Hyre.
Margaret had a long career, first as Office Manager for Pacific Coal and Heating on Pier 48 in Seattle. When that office was closed she joined a management pool company. In that position she used her considerable organization skills and expertise to establish and implement sound office procedures in companies throughout the Seattle area. From 1973 until her retirement in 2003 she operated her own stenographic service out of her home office.
Growing up in Spokane, she learned to play piano, sing duets with her sisters and accompany her brother who played the clarinet. During the late 1940's she conducted the choral program at Woodland Park Methodist Church in Seattle, and was instrumental in establishing an organ fund to purchase an instrument for the church.
Margaret was a member of the Mayflower Society of Washington, holding the position of Corresponding Secretary for over 30 years. She was instrumental in obtaining approval for and establishing the Eastern Washington Chapter, based in Spokane, which was named the Margaret Hyre Chapter. She was also a member of the Elizabeth Bixby Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Towne Society of Washington.
She is survived by her son Kary and her many beloved nieces and nephews.
Memorial Services will be held Saturday February 16, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. at Woodland Park Presbyterian Church, 225 North 70th Street, Seattle 98103. Memorials may be made to the Margaret Hyre Organ Fund for St. John's Episcopal Church at 114-20th Avenue Southeast, Olympia, Washington 98501.
