Martin F. Nelson's father ran away at 15 from Namsos, Norway and stowed away to America. He became a professional wrestler and the strongest man in Ohio. He married Mildred Harrison who, at 15, on November 25th, 1920--gave birth to Martin "Marty" F. Nelson in Painesville, Ohio--the eldest of three brothers--followed by Robert and Richard.

In high school Marty lettered in five sports including football, basketball and track. He won two Golden Gloves Awards.

He joined the Navy in 1942 and reunions of his LST 133 gang became very important to him in his later years.

After the war was over he attended, and graduated from, the University of Minnesota in 1951 and became an electrical engineer.

Marty married Florence Downs in 1946 and they proceeded to have four perfect children.

He married Rose "Ricky" Saleman on his birthday in 1977 and spent the rest of his life completely devoting himself to her. She gave him more joy in life than he ever would have found alone.

Marty's passionate interest in sports was well documented and included fishing (especially trips to Alaska), golf and ballroom dancing. He adored Ohio State University football and the Seahawks.

Marty is survived by his four perfect children and their spouses: Sharon & Ron Bullock, Craig & Shelly Nelson, Bradley & Gretchen Nelson and Laurie Nelson & Jim Randlett; as well as nine grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
