Robert "Blue" Kriebel

Robert "Blue" Kriebel

After a long, full life, Blue passed away peacefully on March 21, 2013 at age 89. Born into a Seattle pioneer family on October 9, 1923, he enjoyed a fun-filled childhood in the Bryant neighborhood and summers at the beach on Bainbridge Island. In 1940, Ladies Home Journal magazine featured the family in a lifestyle article. At 15, Blue traveled across the country with friends in a 1937 Zephyr, thanks to a generous neighborhood sponsor, attending both the NY and SF World Fairs. He graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1942.

Blue entered the University of Washington in 1942 and joined the Beta Theta Pi fraternity. At the end of his freshman year, he was called to active duty, serving in the U.S. Marine Corps V12 Program at the University of Washington. After graduation from Quantico, he was assigned as a ground officer with the U.S. Marine Air Corps until his discharge as a First Lieutenant.

On returning to the UW to finish his degree in economics, he met Muriel Montague, the girl of his dreams on a blind date. They married in 1948 and had two children, Karen and Bob. The family enjoyed winter vacations at NW ski resorts and summer holidays at Lake Chelan. During his long business career, Blue worked in operations and personnel at the National Bank of Commerce and at Sears in Bellevue. After his children were grown, Blue and Muriel joined friends on annual trips to Hawaii. After a marriage of 52 years, Muriel died on March 26, 2001.

Blue loved to golf. He was a member of Sand Point Country Club for over 40 years, where he won the Captain's Cup in 2002. Blue enjoyed entertaining with friends and family, the Fifth Avenue Theater, attending sporting events, and clamming, crabbing and fishing.

Blue breezed through treatment for his final illness, continuing to live an active, uninterrupted life until it finally got the best of him, 21/2 years later. He will be laid to rest beside Muriel at a private family service.

A reception will be held at Sand Point Country Club on April 3, 2013 from 2:00-4:30 P.M.

Blue was a loving father to Karen (Bob Olliver) of Maui, Hawaii and Robert (Elizabeth) Kriebel, of Newport News, Virginia; grandfather to Marc and Brett Olliver and Mary and Sarah Kriebel; brother to Jake (Naoma) Kriebel of Seattle.

Remembrances may be made to Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, P.O. Box 19023, Seattle, WA 98109. The Alliance unites the cancer treatment and research programs of Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, UW Medical Center and Seattle Children's Hospital.
