Annie Zaback Obituary

Annie Katherine Smith ZABACK 1921 ~ 2012 Annie Katherine Smith Zaback, 91, passed away peacefully at her home in Shoreline, Wash. March 3 surrounded by her family and devoted caregivers Amy and Eileen. Katherine was born Feb. 13, 1921 in Center, Texas, where she resided until accepting a secretarial position in Houston. It was there that she met the love of her life and husband of 64 years, Army Air Corps lieutenant Perry Zaback of Battle Creek, Mich. The two were married May 14, 1944 and after the war moved to Portland, Ore. where Perry began working for a heating company. After moves to Tacoma and back to Portland the family settled in the Ballard area of Seattle, where Katherine helped Perry establish Cascade Heating and Air Conditioning, their business of over 40 years. An avid gardener, gourmet cook and bird watcher Katherine spent her days raising the couple's three children and donating countless hours to Crown Hill United Methodist Church. It was there that the couple forged a long friendship with three other church couples, and in later years the eight would travel around the US as well as to Canada, Hawaii and Europe. In retirement the couple moved to Shoreline where Katherine continued to reside after Perry passed away in 2008. Katherine is survived by her daughters Kay Locey of Puyallup, Linda Whiteside and husband Robert of Seattle and son Tim Zaback and wife Ann of Redmond; grandchildren Sarah Locey, Jennifer and Jeffrey Whiteside; Megan and Keith Zaback, wife Robin and great grandsons Logan and Flynn Zaback. Private family services will be held on the couple's anniversary in May. Memorials may be made to Crown Hill United Methodist Church, 8500-14th N.W., Seattle 98117. We were so sorry to hear of Katherine's death. Perry and Katherine were our neighbors in Blue Ridge from 1968 until they moved to Shoreline. (we live in the house with the wide driveway where Tim liked to turn around) They were wonderful neighbors - nice, friendly, helpful - the very best kind. She loved to garden and did such a beautiful job landscaping their back yard. She loved her grandchildren and always kept us up on their latest activities.
We miss both Perry and Katherine. You were lucky to have them for your parents.

I was so sorry to hear of Katherine's passing. I have missed seeing her very much lately. There might be some small comfort in picturing her with Perry and the others from the Bridge Club who went before.
