Barbara E. HUGHES Barbara E. Hughes, 71, died on Monday, December 26, 2011. Formerly of Kirkland, Barbara had been living in Dubuque, Iowa to be close to her family since her diagnosis of ALS in 2009. Barbara was born in Dubuque on October 5, 1940. She received a degree in Anthropology from the University of Washington and a nursing degree from Shoreline Community College. She worked for Northwest Airlines as a flight attendant for 48 years before retiring in 2008. She worked as a nurse at Virginia Mason Hospital for 15 years, retiring in 2010 because of her illness. During her lifetime Barbara traveled throughout the world experiencing and learning from other cultures in many third world countries in the Middle East, Africa and Asia. She climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro and hiked to the base camp of Mt. Everest. She completed The Stanley Expedition hiking the breadth of Tanzania on foot to retrace the route taken by Henry Morton Stanley during his epic search for the wandering missionary Dr. David Livingston. She also climbed Mt. Rainier. Barbara went to Borneo to study orangutans with Birute Galdikas, and went to Nepal where she worked for The Dooley Foundation providing medical assistance to the poor, and where she worked with Mother Theresa at the home for the sick and dying and at a school for the mentally handicapped. She traveled to Pakistan twice and had hoped someday to be able to travel to Afghanistan. Barbara will be greatly missed by her many friends and co-workers from across the country who were fortunate to have been able to know her and to share in her extraordinary life. She is survived by her brother Dan and his wife Doris and nieces Tina (Glen) Hasken, Julie (Mike, Jr.) Schmaltz, and Kimberly (Rick) Dehn and eight grandnieces and nephews, all of Dubuque, Iowa. Funeral services were held in Dubuque. A celebration of Barbara's life will be held in the Seattle area in the spring of 2012.To plant trees in memory, please visit the Sympathy Store.

I met Barbara in the spring of 2010 when we were both getting chiropractic treatment at the same place. Our conversations led to a unique friendship that we believe was the work of Devine Intervention. We talked about her illness and decided to stay in touch. I wrote to her every week and she phoned me every 7 to 10 days until she could no longer speak. The last time we spoke was December 3rd, 2011. When Barbara enters your life it is changed forever. My thoughts and prayers go to her brother Daniel and his entire family.

I first witnessed her indomitable spirit playing tennis with her in the (yikes) 70's. She threw herself into the matches, all the while she never let on that she did this with crushing back pain. This memory is Classic Barb.

Barb Hughes was admired by many for the decisive, yet compassionate leader that she was. Barb was responsible for recognizing Barb Johnson's confusion on her last visit to cabin service and calmly taking her into another room to talk quietly, giving managers and co-workers a chance to set up an exit strategy that got Barb Johnson on the road to recovery! She faced life with exuberance and courage...an example to us all. It was always a pleasure to fly with Barb during my almost 39 years with Northwest/Delta, and she will be missed. Peace and blessings to the family! Hugs to all, Jill Greer PQ/FA

I have no words that can express my sorrow. She has been a major influence on my life. Our travels were amazing and I now have memories that flood my mind day and night.
Barbara I love you, you were not suppose to leave so soon. Our bucket list was not finished.
But you are on the best adventure and one well deserved.

I remember that in my first years flying out of SEA, I was flying with Barb and Judy Neu. They knew that I had studied and loved the ballet; therefore, invited me to come with them because they somehow knew the lead male dancer. We got all dressed up in evening gowns. Being relatively new to SEA, I was used to people always dressing up for the ballet or theater. I was shocked to see how eclectic people dressed in everything from eveningwear to jeans, but Barb and Judy took it in stride as they had lived h.ere longer. We had a wonderful evening. I flew on occasion with Barb and Judy and loved to hear about their adventures. Barb seemed fearless as she took every opportunity to explore the world and some of her adventures sounded incredible. Some F/As made fun of me when I went back to school, but I so admired Barb for taking on the challenging task of nursing while still flying and heard that after she graduated that she would take on difficult cases. Barb's spirit of adventure was incredible; her quiet kind heart, her intelligence, calm kindness, dry sense of humor, and seemingly boundless energy to be able to work as a F/A and a nurse on her days off was extraordinary. She was her own woman with her own sense of style, but more important she was a credit to both of the professions she chose to take on. May the peace and blessings of the Universe be with dear lady - you are missed. Barbara E. Manrow SEA NWA F/A and Purser - retired 2009.

I was in total awe of Barb when I first began to fly. Here was a woman that did it all and held in her heart the ability for compassion and selflessness. How refreshing she was in a world filled with self-indulgence. Her remarkable energy and kindness will be sorely missed in this world.
