Dennis McCoy Obituary

Dennis Lee (Stoagie) McCoy

Born May 15, 1949 Yakima, Washington; died November 15, 2017 in Newberg, Oregon. After a hard-fought battle with ALS, Dennis Lee McCoy passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family and close friends.

Dennis grew-up in Yakima until he moved to Seattle at age 14. He graduated from Shorecrest High School, then Shoreline Community College. Dennis joined the Seattle Police Department at age 19 as a cadet and served for over 42 years until retiring in 2011.

He lived his life by the words of his favorite quote: "A man's got to do what a man's got to do." - John Wayne.

Dennis took great joy in helping others, taking care of all of those close to him without hesitation or expectation. Every single day he exemplified selflessness, humor, responsibility, positivity, and strength. He touched the lives of everyone he met and is remembered fondly as one of the most generous and giving people. He loved his family, animals, country music, history, riding motorcycles with his IMPC brothers, barbecuing, card games and karaoke.

Dennis was preceded in death by his mother, Edith McCoy and his brother Bob McCoy.

He is survived by his loving wife Jennifer McCoy; children, Michael McCoy (Maria), Robert McCoy (Jackie), Glenna McCoy, Matthew Hume (Cherie), Daniel McCoy (Robin), and Katherine McCoy; sisters, Jean, Carmen & Deliah; 7 grandchildren; and the countless others he took under his wing to consider family.

Services will be held 1:00pm, December 2nd at the Family Life Church, 502 S St. Paul Hwy, Newberg, Orgeon.

Denny was my Field Training Officer in 1980. He helped mold me to be the police officer I am still today. I am forever grateful that our paths crossed and we remained good friends all these years! He was the best teacher I could have ever hoped for! We have great stories and we talked a few months ago about hoping to go to a Mexican restauant for lunch. The same one I took him to when I finished the training program.....he had a dead fly in his rice and when asking the waitress what it was ...she said a dead fly, picked it out left his plate there and he gave me the "Denny stare"...I was sure he was flunking me out of the training program. One of our best stories about "flied rice". He was a great and caring man who truly influenced me throughout my career. Miss you Denny, Captain Robin Clark..SPD

He lived a good life and fought a good fight. We never worked together, but I remember our academy days as clearly as they were yesterday. A good man then became even better. I know his family has a treasure trove of good memories to help them through the difficult days of grieving to come. Rest in peace Denny.

Dennis, I am so saddened by your passing. You were a great colleague, a good friend, and wonderful Spirit. In retirement, we look back on our career as Law Enforcement Professionals, and remember those who we've stood shoulder to shoulder with under difficult circumstances. You were one of the good guys..It was an honor being your Friend.

RIP my bother

May the road rise up to meet you. May the wind be always at your back, may the sun shine warm upon your face, and the rains fall soft upon your fields. And until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of his hand.
