Dorothy Anderson Obituary

Dorothy Hannah Anderson

Dorothy Hannah Sy Anderson died on August 2, 2018, at the age of 94. She was born on February 17, 1924, in Saginaw, Michigan, to Ida Brecht and Herman Sy, the fifth of six children. She lived in Saginaw until she was 8 years old, then the family moved to an 80-acre farm in Hope, Michigan.

When she was 16, Dorothy lived with her sister in California and a year later returned to Michigan and became one of the first women lathe operators with the Cadillac Division at General Motors. In 1943, at the age of 19, she joined the Canadian Women's Army Corps then transferred to the WACs in 1944, where she served at McDill Field in Florida.

After the war, Dorothy moved to Seattle, found secretarial work in the law profession, a career she would hold for many years, and used the GI Bill to take flying lessons at Kertzer Flying Service on Lake Union. She also met Harold Roger Anderson. The two were married in 1953 and would have three children: Leslie, Karen, and Keith.

Dorothy and Harold lived in the Lake City area for more than 50 years and enjoyed family camping trips, hiking, a summer home at Spee Be Dah, skiing, church activities, and in later years, bicycle trips to Europe with friends. They moved to Edmonds in 2005. A few years after Harold's death in 2008, Dorothy moved to the Cristwood Retirement Center in Shoreline.

Dorothy is survived by her three children: Leslie Muntz (Andy) of Edmonds, Karen Bertram of Kingston, and Keith Anderson (Julie Cottereil) of Sandpoint, Idaho; six grandchildren: Nathan and Aaron Muntz, Wanda and Ursula Bertram, and Keenan and Lillian Anderson; and two great-grandchildren: Brody and Adilyn Muntz.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, August 23 at the Cristwood Retirement Center, 350 N. 190th Street in Shoreline. Donations can be made to the American Heart Association, Lamb of God Lutheran Church in Lake City, or the Lutheran Women's Missionary League.
