Eleanor Monroe Obituary

Eleanor Betty Louise (Jensen) Monroe

On December 21, 2014, Eleanor passed away too soon while stoically battling brain cancer.

Eleanor was born in Seattle in 1932 to Freida (Rosbach) and Raymond Jensen. She grew up on Queen Anne. She attended Seattle Pacific University to get her teaching degree in 1954. She taught elementary school in the Shoreline School District for 34 years, starting with Hillcrest Elementary School during their opening year. In her later years, she evaluated and mentored students in the UW teaching program. Eleanor was a pioneer, in teaching many children with dyslexia in her career, which extended into her eighties, never truly allowing her to retire!

Eleanor was also a proud member of the Seattle University Womens' Club. She was heavily involved with the English Speaking Union's Annual Shakespeare Competition serving as the Executive Coordinator for many years. Eleanor was especially fond of her Alpha Delta Kappa sorority sisters.

In 1968 she married John Monroe in front of family, friends and her second grade class.

She is survived by her brother-in-law Paul and Doris Monroe, and her two dogs, Lancelot and Piper.

A Celebration of Eleanor's life will be held at Richmond Beach 1st Lutheran Church on Thursday January 22nd at 11:00am. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Eleanor's memory to the Slingerland Institute for Literacy.

A sad good-bye to you, Eleanor. You were a thoughtful and loving and devoted teacher and wonderful friend. We last visited at Maryon Troxel's birthday but often ran into one another in the neighborhood while grocery shopping, buying a latte or fine-dining in local restaurants. You hid well the disease you were fighting and put on a bright smile showing your courage instead of pain. You will forever be remembered and deeply missed!

Dear Grammie Eleanor:
This is Cinnamon. Eye woof you so much. I have only big hearts, puppy tail wags and huge, canine hugs for you. Thank you for always loving me, playing with me and giving me treats. You knew me when I was just a baby, a pocket puppy. I am a big boy now. You are the best human in the world. I always knew what house to run to and which door to stand in front of. It was the home where the beautiful lady lived. The lady with the biggest heart and the most graceful smile. Mommy would let me out of the car several blocks from your home. I knew which door to run to and bark at. I will miss snuggling with you in your arm chair. You make my brown eyes blue with tenderness and adoration for you. I will always put my paws together and pray for you and Grandpa John each night before I fall asleep. You are my amazing angels. Thank you for loving my human mom and dad also. They will love, honor and cherish you until the very last breath they take. Love & more love, your Grand-dog, Cinnamon
