Hugh Dean DANIELS, Jr. May 13, 1920 ~ June 28, 2011 Born in Startup, WA. Hugh was the oldest of seven children born to Hugh and Dora. He graduated from Sultan High School in 1939 where he lettered in several sports. From 1939-1942, he worked on the railroad as a Gandy Dancer, and in the woods, as a Bucker and Faller. In 1942 he joined the Coast Guard and served in Alaska. There, he met and married Patricia H. Kane on August 28, 1945. He worked at the L. Kane Store, in Hoonah; on the dock and in freight. He moved his family to Queen Anne Hill in September of 1949, where he worked for the Seattle Gas Company and Everett Plywood. The family moved to Eureka, CA in December of 1953 where he bought into the Mutual Plywood Co. and worked until September 1959. Hugh and his family moved back to WA and bought a home in Lake Forest Park where he returned to Everett Plywood. Early in 1969 Hugh began working at sea. For six months he worked as a cook for Leland Daniels, his cousin. Then, in the summer of 1969, he worked for the Atomic Energy Commission in Amchitka, AK on the ship conducting atomic testing there. He then worked 15 years, from March 1970 - until his retirement in 1985, for Foss Launch and Tug Co., where he was considered a cook extraordinaire. Hugh was preceded in death by his wife Patricia (2001), his parents Dora (Kager) and Hugh Dean, his brother James and sister Patricia Cotteril, sister-in-law Eloise and brother-in-law Charlie Buhl. He is survived by four siblings: Shirley (Dixie), Reda Buhl, Doug, and Ena Totten (Storm), and brother-in-law Frank Cotterill; his four children, Patricia Maxwell, Stephanie Cady, Michelle Campbell and Hugh Dean Daniels III; seven grandchildren, Jeromey Campbell (Lucy), Joseph Maxwell, Lara Weberling (Kevin), Christopher Maxwell (Colleen), Jennifer Campbell (Jill Gance), Thomas Cady and Peter Maxwell (Patricia); 11 great grandchildren, Brandi, Jordyn, Dakota and Jack CampbelI, Chelsea Childress, Elle and Hans Weberling, Erin and Claire Maxwell, and Savannah Maxwell and Kayla; a nephew Stanley (Steamie) Thompson, several cousins, nieces, nephews, Tom Mellor and numerous other friends. "Papa" is remembered lovingly by his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He loved (and played) sports, he would attend their games whenever he could, and watched every sport there was on TV. His garden was one of the first stops on a visit to Papa's. It was where everyone was welcome to help plant, weed, harvest, preserve and enjoy everything he grew. He would ready the pool for all the kids, as long as he could, and then he supervised the process. Most of all he cooked and cooked and cooked for everyone. No one ever left Papa's house hungry. Holidays and family birthdays were usually celebrated at his home where familiar and delicious recipes were prepared with loving care, and in great quantity. To plant trees in memory, please visit the Sympathy Store.
