I took German from Leon when I was in college in the 1970's. Great teacher and great human being. He is someone who could have easily become my friend as well. I'll miss him.

I had him as a German instructor years ago hit North Seattle community college, and he was great. I remember his fiery and enthusiastic personality. Now that I know he has died. I will say Kaddish for him when it´s appropriate. May his memory be a blessing

As a newly divorced woman, trying to find my way, I was lucky to be at North Seattle College in his French class. He was a genuine, kind mentor to me helping, advising and giving me the confidence to continue my education. The highlight of his friendship was seeing him and Teiko at my Seattle University graduation 34 years ago. A surprise acknowledgement , and not expected, from a simple mail invitation. To take an interest and time with a stranger spoke to his nature of seeing and being present when I needed help. A true man of worth. I valued and remembered all he gave me. A worthwhile beautiful gift with enormous value. I'm grateful for his friendship. Thank you!

It is the nature of time and distance that we often have to find out about the passing of long-lost friends via the internet. Today, my dear husband and I were out walking. He reminded me of a lesson our dear friend Professor Applebaum taught us (that he no doubt learned from conversations with his beloved wife, Teiko) to see not only the leaves of the tree but the spaces between the leaves. The wisdom, philosophy and humor of this fine man return often to us, keeping him ever alive in our hearts. May all who knew and loved him be comforted.

I'm truly sorry for the loss of a wonderful, friend, mentor and caring person who helped me transition to a new beginning as a frightened person at NSCC in his French Class.
He was genuinely interested in the individual and that was shown to me in so many ways. So sorry I lost touch with him through the years, but he was ever present in my thoughts always.
His legacy will live on through his work.
